Inter Miami has paid tribute to their absent captain Lionel Messi following the death of his father.
Jorge Messi, who was also his son’s agent, passed away aged 68 in his hometown of Rosario, Argentina, on Friday, with his family confirming the news the following day.
As a result, Messi missed his side’s Leagues Cup clash with Monterrey at Nu Stadium, which Miami lost 2-1.
A minute’s silence was observed ahead of kick-off, with Jorge Messi’s name shown on screens inside the venue. Miami players could also be seen wearing black armbands.
In the 10th minute, the number worn by Messi, fans chanted and unveiled flags in support of the 39-year-old, including one that read “Fuerza [stay strong] Leo”.
Miami midfielder Rodrigo De Paul, who captained the team Saturday, honoured his compatriot after opening the scoring in the 32nd minute, when he removed his shirt to reveal a Messi No 10 jersey.
Hugo Cuypers levelled the score shortly after half-time before Diego Rossi netted a 90th-minute winner for the Mexican side to take all three points and put a major dent in Miami’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the competition.
It is not yet known when Messi, who arrived in Rosario on Saturday ahead of a reported private memorial service, will return to Miami.
‘Our hearts are with our captain’
Earlier in the day, the MLS club had written: “Our hearts are with our captain, Leo, and the entire Messi family.”
Meanwhile, Luis Suarez, who missed Saturday’s game because of a suspension, also sent a message of support to his teammate and friend.
“Friend, I hug you and your family strongly,” the striker posted on social media.
“Your dad, from above, will continue to watch you with pride like he did always. All my love in these difficult moments to the Messi Family. Rest in peace, Jorge.”
The Messi family had kept details of Jorge’s illness private before revealing during this summer’s World Cup that he was in the process of receiving medical treatment.
After scoring in Argentina’s opening match against Algeria, an emotional Messi admitted his celebration was about more than football.
“I have been through some difficult, complicated days,” he said.
“I am thankful for the support I have received from my teammates and the staff during this time.”
