Steven Spielberg is one of the most influential directors in science-fiction history. The legendary filmmaker has been singing the praises of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films. According to Spielberg, the modern saga is reshaping the genre for a new generation.
Dune and its 2024 sequel, Dune: Part Two, reimagined Frank Herbert’s classic novels for today’s audiences. The films follow Paul Atreides, played by Timothee Chalamet, as he navigates political betrayal, prophecy and war on the desert planet Arrakis.
Spielberg’s fondness for the franchise has only grown with each new film.
“Recently, I’ve loved the ‘Dune’ movies. They are among my favorite science-fiction movies, not just recently, but of all time. Especially the second film,” Spielberg told Variety in April.
“I think [Part Two] is the best movie Denis has ever made. I cannot wait to see the third one. I’m sure he’ll show it to me early. I’m such a fan of his.”
Spielberg’s praise adds to a growing chorus of filmmakers who consider Dune one of the genre’s modern high points.

Dune: Part Threeis set to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026. The film is based on Frank Herbert’s novel Dune Messiah, the direct sequel to the two books already adapted.
Spielberg’s excitement for the film goes beyond just being a fan. He has placed Villeneuve in rare company.
The iconic filmmaker named him among a short list of great cinematic “world builders.” That list includes directors like Stanley Kubrick, George Lucas and Christopher Nolan.
“I deeply, fervently believe that you are one of its newest members,” he told Variety. “And that scene surfing the sandworms is one of the greatest things I have ever seen. Ever!”
The anticipation surrounding Part Three comes at a notable moment for Spielberg as well. His own sci-fi film, Disclosure Day, opened in June and became one of his biggest domestic debuts. It kept him active in the genre he helped define.
