This man decided to deliver for DoorDash in America’s richest neighborhood to see if he could make enough money in one night to afford somewhere nice to sleep.
Brandon traveled to Beverly Hills, California, and set himself the challenge of surviving for 24 hours using only money earned from food deliveries.
He used both DoorDash and Uber Eats at the same time in the hope of maximizing his orders and tips.
But with a broken e-bike, expensive food, and a pricey hotel room standing between him and a bed, the experiment wasn’t exactly smooth sailing.
DoorDashing in America’s richest neighborhood was harder than expected
Surely delivering food to people in America’s richest neighborhood would have you living in the lap of luxury, right?
Well, for Brandon, a YouTuber who had never DoorDashed before, he thought so, so he set himself a challenge of saving up the money from one day of deliveries to book himself one night in a swanky Hotel.
He spoke to an experienced delivery driver who told him that an e-bike could be a great way to make money because it avoided traffic, parking, and gas costs.
His first DoorDash delivery took around an hour and a half of biking and earned him just $5.39, meaning he had a long way to go if he wanted to cover the cost of a hotel in Beverly Hills.
Things became even more chaotic when his $150 Facebook Marketplace e-bike started falling apart.
His seat broke, his battery was running low and one wrong turn turned a two-mile delivery into an accidental six-mile trip.
Not to mention that at one point, Brandon also nearly got hit by a car.
“Oh my gosh. I almost just freaking died,” he said after a car came dangerously close to him.
The hard work did pay off when a customer gave him a $35 tip after he delivered food to a particularly nice building, while another tipped him an incredible $43 for a two-mile delivery involving a bowl of soup.
“That literally might be the most expensive bowl of soup of all time,” Brandon said.
He also got a glimpse of just how high value Beverly Hills was while riding between deliveries, passing Lamborghinis, G-Wagons, giant mansions and some seriously expensive stores.
“The amount of G-Wagons that I have to avoid is absolutely insane,” he said, perhaps not realizing there’s a very good reason why so many wealthy people own a G-Wagen.
His tips had to be high enough to survive the night
Brandon’s biggest challenge was that Beverly Hills was expensive even when he wasn’t delivering food, he spent $5.90 on a Cliff Bar and watermelon juice at a gas station, while his e-bike was becoming increasingly unreliable.
After the lunch rush ended, he went more than an hour without getting a single delivery, leaving him worried that his plan would fail.
“I’m actually starting to get p*ssed off. It’s been over an hour. Still zero deliveries,” he said.
He eventually repaired his broken seat and waited for the dinner rush, which experienced drivers had told him was one of the best times to make money.
“If you’re doing just food delivery, the sweet spot is lunchtime from like 11:30 to 1:30,” the experienced driver explained.
“And then dinner from like 5:00 to 9:00. That’s the best time to make money.”
Dinner became a frantic race against the clock and the YouTuber completed DoorDash orders and even attempted a grocery-shopping delivery, but one restaurant order left him waiting for 35 minutes while a line of other delivery drivers collected their food.
Eventually, his e-bike completely died.
“Well guys, my bike is officially dead,” Brandon said.
“The sun is about to set and I am so unbelievably tired.”
After his first-ever day of DoorDashing, Brandon had made $143 from DoorDash and another $23 from Uber Eats, giving him a total of $166.
That was enough to pay for the cheapest hotel he could find in Beverly Hills, which cost $31 for the night. It was a long way from the $4,000-per-night hotel he had shown earlier, but at least he had enough money to get some sleep and food for himself.
“I would say that yesterday was a success,” Brandon said.
But speaking to Supercar Blondie after the challenge, Brandon said he believed his earnings were partly down to the circumstances of the experiment.
“I think I only made that amount of money because people saw me on a bike in 95 degree weather delivering their food and felt bad for me, otherwise I don’t think I would have earned nearly as much,” he admitted.
He also said the location of a delivery driver could have a major impact on their earnings, particularly when working in a wealthy and densely populated area.
“I really think it depends on the delivery location. If you are in a populated area with rich people, you are much more likely to earn more money than in a rural town.”
Brandon also pointed to California’s Prop 22 as another factor that could affect the economics of delivery work in Beverly Hills.
“In Beverly Hills, there is also Prop 22, which guarantees minimum wage while also delivering food. So, in a place where the minimum wage is over $20, you can make much more than in a random town in the Midwest.”
The experience also completely changed how Brandon viewed delivery drivers.
“I have so much more respect for delivery drivers after doing the video.”
He said the number of times he nearly got hit by a car, combined with the strange looks he received while carrying his large DoorDash bag into restaurants, had changed his perspective on the job and the service itself.
Despite the difficult day, Brandon wasn’t put off from delivering food again.
“I will definitely be DoorDashing again, I want to try it in NYC.”
But the experiment left him wondering whether a similarly wealthy neighborhood to America’s richest neighborhood could produce even bigger tips.
His next target was Hidden Hills, a gated community in the Santa Monica Mountains known for its enormous homes and celebrity residents.
