Ben Jones, best known for playing Cooter Davenport on The Dukes of Hazzard, has died at 84.
Jones’ wife, Alma Viator, announced his death Sunday, saying he died from a massive heart attack while waiting for the Atlanta Braves game to begin. She shared a photo on her Facebook of Jones smiling and holding a dog, writing that he had “the most amazing rich full life” and that he “loved and was loved by so many.”
The Hollywood Reporter noted that the actor previously recovered from a drinking problem before diving into his acting career.
For generations of Dukes of Hazzard fans, however, Jones will forever be remembered as Cooter, the lovable Hazzard County mechanic who was always ready to help Bo and Luke Duke get their battered vehicles back on the road.
‘Crazy Cooter Comin’ at Ya!’
Cooter wasn’t just the town mechanic.
He was an honorary member of the Duke family and one of the show’s most recognizable supporting characters. Jones appeared as Cooter in 141 episodes of The Dukes of Hazzard, which ran from 1979 through 1985.
Cooter was known for his distinctive CB handle, “Crazy Cooter,” and his signature radio introduction: “Breaker One, Breaker One, I might be crazy, but I ain’t dumb! Craaazy Cooter comin’ at ya!”
The line became part of the character’s identity and remains one of the most recognizable pieces of Cooter lore among fans.
Jones’ performance also helped make Cooter more than simply the mechanic who kept the General Lee running. He was a trusted friend of the Duke boys and regularly helped them evade Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane and Boss Hogg.
Ben Jones Had a Life Far Beyond ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’
Although Cooter became Jones’ signature role, acting was only one part of his remarkably varied career.
Before The Dukes of Hazzard, Jones appeared in projects including Moonrunners and Smokey and the Bandit. Moonrunners, released in 1975, was particularly significant because the movie helped inspire the television series that would eventually make Jones famous.
After The Dukes of Hazzard ended, Jones took his career in an entirely different direction.
He entered politics and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Georgia in 1988. He served two terms in Congress, from 1989 through 1993, before returning to the entertainment world and his connection to the Dukes fan community.
In later years, Jones and his wife operated Cooter’s Place, a Dukes of Hazzard-themed museum and memorabilia business that became a destination for fans of the classic series.
