Brad Pitt is opening up about his mental health, amid what he refers to as “family stuff” in his life.
In a new cover story with Esquire, the 62-year-old actor recalled a period of time where he could “understand suicide,” while being adamant he wasn’t actually suicidal himself.
His comments come after his 2016 split from Angelina Jolie; their divorce wasn’t finalized until 2024. Of the couple’s six children—Maddox, Zahara, Shiloh, Pax, Knox, and Vivienne— four of them have filed to have “Pitt” removed from their last names.
Understanding Suicide
“I was never suicidal in any way. It just was not my makeup,” Pitt shared in the new profile. “In fact, if I have any afflictions, it’s probably being a congenital optimist. Which has helped many times, and it’s also gotten me—I’ve walked foolishly head-on into a Mack truck because of my optimism.”
He added that Seven director David Fincher has told him, “Yeah, you see the glass as half full, but it’s half full of urine.”
“Anyway, I’ve never been suicidal except for one little period. And in that one little period, I just thought—I just couldn’t—just didn’t see a way out,” Pitt then continued. “The pain was so oppressive that—I wasn’t going to act on this, but I could feel—I could feel the cold steel of the bullet in my head, and it felt like relief. And I thought, Oh, okay, now I understand—I understand suicide, in the sense that it’s just relief. It’s just looking for relief from the pain.”
Explaining that, for him, his “survival instincts … immediately kicked in,” he added, “Yeah. Like, listen: This s–t ain’t easy.” Pitt then acknowledged, “And you’re talking to a guy who won the lottery.”
When asked whether those moments of “oppressive” pain were related to “kid stuff,” Pitt responded, “Family stuff. We could leave it at that.”
No Longer Sober
Elsewhere in the cover story, Pitt also opened up about his decision to start drinking again, after being very public about his sobriety and going to Alcoholics Anonymous in recent years. The subject came up after the reporter noted that Pitt offered him wine during the interview, wondering whether alcohol was reserved for guests.
“No, I got—I was sober for seven years. And then I got back off the wagon,” Pitt replied, reportedly with a “little laugh.”
“In a more restrained manner. I got overconfident a couple times, went, Yep, nope, not good for me. Not in big quantities,” he explained, before the reporter said it sounded like Pitt was saying it could “have a glass of wine.”
“Yeah. Well … I can have a few. But I can’t have a lot. I have to be professional about it,” Pitt concluded.
If you or someone you know is in emotional distress or considering suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
