Jason Reitman’s Astro Boy live-action movie adaptation has been shelved at Sony, but there is still hope. Announced at the beginning of this year, recent updates hint that the live-action adaptation of Osamu Tezuka’s Manga is no longer moving forward with production.
Such an update came from Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider, aka The Insneider. In an article he shared, “Jason Reitman’s live-action Astro Boy movie will not be moving forward at Sony.”
While the movie is reported not to be proceeding to production, there still might be some hope for fans. Sneider has shared that some other filmmaker might pick up the project later. “The project could, of course, be resurrected by someone else down the line”, he added.
Astro Boy, who is also referred to as Mighty Atom in Japan, is a young robot who was created by scientist Umataro Tenma. After Tenma lost his own son in an accident, he created the robotic boy. But later, Tenma sold him to a robot circus. The sci-fi story then develops around the life of Astro Boy.
Why Jason Reitman’s Astro Boy movie mattered to the filmmaker
While reports from Sneider hint that the project might get revived, Reitman was extremely passionate about this film. “It seemed like a passion project for Reitman, so this may be the end of the line on that one. Apologies to all the Astro Boy fans out there,” read Sneider’s opinion.
Filmmaker Jason Reitman, who is known for directing films like Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and Juno (2007), took up the project of adapting Astro Boy as a live-action family film. He was joining hands with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan to direct the classic Japanese Manga by Osamu Tezuka for Sony.
The original manga of Astro Boy was written by Tezuka back in the 1950s. The English translation of the Japanese series was first public 2002 by Dark Horse Comics. The story has been adapted several times across film, television, video games, and more. The 1980 series directed by Noboru Ishiguro turned out to be a major hit, particularly in Australia. An animated film by Imagi Animation Studios and Summit Entertainment titled Astro Boy was released in 2009.
