Jason Isaacs recently addressed the controversy surrounding The Salt Path on the podcast Kermode on Film. The actor starred alongside Gillian Anderson in the film adaptation of Raynor Winn’s book.The Observer published an investigation that cast doubt on several claims in the book, which publishers marketed as a memoir.
During the podcast, Isaacs discussed the film’s upcoming US release amid the scrutiny. “It’s going to be interesting doing publicity for The Salt Path now that there’s been [renewed scrutiny],” the British actor said. He also questioned whether the US release team wanted him to promote the film, but they confirmed they did.
Isaacs maintained that The Salt Path remains a “beautiful film” and that “much of it is still completely valid.” He acknowledged that “some of the things have been questioned” and called the upcoming promotion an “interesting experience.” Anderson separately described the situation as “very unfortunate” in an interview with Radio Times.
Anderson noted that the film had been performing well in the UK before the controversy emerged. “I think we were about to sign with Sony Classics for the United States the week when the article came out, so it sucked,” she told Radio Times. In the original book, Winn claimed she and her husband Moth walked the 600-mile South West Coast Path after losing their home. She also wrote about Moth’s diagnosis with corticobasal degeneration.The Observer’s investigation raised questions about specific details, including the circumstances of their homelessness and aspects of Moth’s illness. Winn’s legal team responded by calling the article “highly misleading” and confirming they were seeking legal advice.
