Despite having no prior experience, this American man single-handedly built a 100ft mega yacht in his backyard.
Clyde Stires had ambitions to build his own yacht, but had no shipyard in which to build one.
Approximately 85 miles from the ocean, he got to work and got the job done in his own yard.
It was a momentous achievement – and it’s had quite the life since completion.
More and more people are trying their hand at shipbuilding
Traditionally, yachts have been seen as the reserve of the ultra-rich.
And yeah, there’s no getting around the fact that these vessels are expensive to run.
But in recent years, more and more people have been setting out and building their own yachts.
For one man in Finland, his endeavor saw him build a solar-powered yacht.
Then there were the two friends who took to building boats inside a barn.
And how could we forget the couple who are fixing up an abandoned superyacht they found in Alaska?
Then there’s Clyde Stires, who took to building a mega yacht in his own backyard.
The premise sounds like something straight out of a movie, doesn’t it?
But this story is all too real.
How Clyde built his own mega yacht
With no prior experience in shipbuilding and no team on hand to help to get the job done, Stires was effectively a one-man team.
He drew up the plans and got to work, investing five years of his life into the project.
When at long last it was finished, one problem presented itself – this was an absolutely massive boat.
And now he had to figure out how to get it to the ocean.
The yacht, named Kaleidoscope, had to be cut into seven sections.
These sections would then to be hauled off to the water by various trailers.
Once in a San Diego marina, the boat was put back together.
Problem solved, so that’s the end of the story, right?
Well, not quite.
Things took a turn for the worse
In life, things are rarely straightforward and simple.
And boy is that true in the case of Kaleidoscope.
One day, while sitting in a restaurant, Stires received a frantic phone call from his secretary.
“She said ‘They’re stealing your boat’,” he recalled in an interview with his nephew.
Who was stealing his boat? None other than the Mexican Cartel.
What followed was a long-winded saga in which the Mexican Navy was dispatched to retrieve the boat.
Fortunately, he ended up getting the boat back, after it was taken into custody.
