As Lakers governor, Buss serves as the main decision-maker in all business matters and represents the team at the NBA’s Board of Governors meetings. Team governors must maintain at least a 15% ownership of a franchise to continue in the governor’s role.

Buss remained a team governor despite the 2025 sale of the team to Mark Walter, Los Angeles Dodgers and Chelsea soccer team owner, for $10 million.

Buss, 64, has been governor of the team since 2013, when her father, Dr. Jerry Buss, died, leaving the franchise in the hands of his six children. Buss was then named controlling owner of the team in March 2017.
