The Cleveland Cavaliers are trading guard Dennis Schröder and cash to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for guard Tre Mann, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The deal helps the Cavaliers clear $6.8 million, which moves them to about $29.6 million under the first apron, per Keith Smith. The Hornets add that same salary to their books and will be about $20 million under the luxury tax line.
Schröder has become a journeyman for the NBA. Charlotte will be the 12th franchise that the guard has played for in his 13-year career. This would be the second-most for a player in NBA history.
The guard would be tied at 12 alongside Chucky Brown, Jim Jackson, Tony Massenburg, Joe Smith, and Garrett Temple, per Smith. Ish Smith holds the record for having played for 13 teams in his career.
This also marks the ninth time that Schröder has been traded in his career. Trevor Ariza holds the record for being the most traded player in NBA history, having been moved 11 times during his career.
Schröder began his career in 2013 when the Atlanta Hawks drafted him with the 17th overall pick in that year’s NBA Draft. He has bounced around the league over the last 13 years, and most recently, the guard spent last season with the Sacramento Kings and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Between both franchises, he played in 70 games and averaged 10.8 points, 2.7 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 24.2 minutes per game.
Mann was the 18th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder. After three years in OKC, the guard was traded to the Hornets in a package that saw forward Gordon Heyward return to the Thunder.
Last season, Mann played in 53 games for Charlotte. He averaged 5.5 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 12.6 minutes off the bench.
NBA analyst Marc Stein had reported on August 12th that Cleveland had interest in moving Schröder as part of a plan to clear cap space in order to offer restricted free agent Peyton Watson a four-year deal.
