Kendrick Perkins cannot understand how the Cleveland Cavaliers had LeBron James back in Northeast Ohio, secured a face-to-face meeting with him and still watched him choose another team.
Speaking on Road Trippin’, Perkins blasted Cleveland’s handling of James’ free agency after the 41-year-old ultimately signed with the Philadelphia 76ers. His frustration centered on one belief: the Cavaliers had an opportunity to make themselves far more attractive to James by pursuing Jaylen Brown, but refused to sacrifice one of their established stars to do it.
“It’s no way in hell that you get a face-to-face meeting with Bron,” Perkins said. “He was in Akron for almost three weeks. He met with y’all. Like, how do you mess this up?”
James did seriously consider Cleveland during his first unrestricted free agency in years. His agent, Rich Paul, publicly identified the Cavaliers among the legitimate contenders for his services, alongside Philadelphia, Miami and several other teams. Philadelphia eventually separated itself after acquiring Brown from Boston, giving James a roster featuring Brown, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe.
That Brown move is at the heart of Perkins’ criticism.
Before Brown was traded to Philadelphia, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst had floated the possibility of Cleveland acquiring him as a way of strengthening its pitch to James. Windhorst later said he believed such a deal likely would have required the Cavaliers to make Evan Mobley available – something Cleveland was unwilling to do.
Perkins believes that decision may have cost the Cavaliers LeBron.
“If Cleveland would have made a move and traded for Jaylen Brown, nine times out of ten, LeBron James would have been in Cleveland,” he said.
That statement is Perkins’ opinion, not a confirmed account of James’ decision-making. But there is evidence that Brown’s arrival in Philadelphia mattered. Rich Paul said the 76ers’ revamped roster commanded attention, and subsequent reporting described the Brown trade as an important factor in James ultimately choosing Philadelphia.
Perkins argued that Cleveland’s reluctance to part with either Mobley or Donovan Mitchell represented the fundamental problem.
“But y’all didn’t want to part ways with one of your guys,” he said. “Whether that was Evan Mobley or Donovan Mitchell, you did not want to part ways.”

The Cavaliers were essentially confronted with the type of decision contenders hate making: protect a younger core that can compete for years, or make an aggressive short-term move designed to maximize a shrinking championship window with one of the greatest players in league history.
Cleveland chose continuity. Philadelphia chose aggression.
The 76ers traded for Brown and then landed James, who will enter his 24th NBA season alongside a roster built to contend immediately. Brown has already spoken publicly about accepting sacrifice in pursuit of a championship with Philadelphia’s star-heavy group.
Perkins believes Cleveland will regret not showing the same urgency.
He went so far as to predict that the Cavaliers may now go another eight or nine years without winning a championship – an intentionally dramatic projection, but one that captures how large he believes the missed opportunity was.
For Cleveland, there is no way to know whether trading Mobley or Mitchell for Brown would actually have guaranteed another LeBron homecoming. That part will remain hypothetical.
What is real is that James considered Cleveland, Brown became available, Philadelphia acquired him and James followed.
To Perkins, that sequence makes the Cavaliers’ failure to close the deal almost impossible to forgive.
