Netflix has released the first full trailer for A Different World online. The sequel introduces a new generation of Hillman College students. Several original cast members also return to the fictional HBCU.
The series centers on Deborah Wayne, played by Tony winner Maleah Joi Moon. She is the youngest daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, whose romance is central to the original series. Deborah arrives at Hillman determined to forge her own path.
The new ensemble includes Rashida Duvall, played by Alijah Kai, and Shaquille Johnson, played by Cornell Young IV. Jordan Aaron Hall stars as psychology major Amir Rodale. Chibuikem Uche portrays Kojo Achebe, a Ghanaian-Nigerian fashion entrepreneur.

What do we see in the A Different World trailer?
The two-minute, 14-second trailer follows Deborah as she begins college and faces expectations tied to her famous parents. She starts finding her place at Hillman while getting to know her new classmates. Shaquille is a five-star athlete and the son of Ron Johnson, a former Hillman student.
Several original stars appear alongside the new cast. Kadeem Hardison returns as Dwayne Wayne, while Jasmine Guy reprises her role as Whitley Gilbert. Cree Summer is back as Freddie Brooks, with Darryl M. Bell returning as Ron Johnson.
Jenifer Lewis and Jada Pinkett Smith are also set to reprise their respective roles. Their appearances connect the new story to the original series while introducing a new generation of Hillman students.
Felicia Pride serves as showrunner, executive producer and writer on the 10-episode series. Debbie Allen returns as an executive producer and directs three episodes. She also directed and produced episodes of the original series.
The story shifts attention to the children of Hillman’s earlier generation. It follows their relationships, personal growth, and experiences on campus.
A Different World originally premiered in 1987 as a spinoff of The Cosby Show. Netflix will premiere the new sequel series on Sept. 24, 2026.
