Ghost Rider now has a release date. Ryan Gosling‘s movie is a risky proposition, but its potential success is crucial to the MCU‘s future.
Marvel has dated Ghost Rider for July 28, 2028. That means three Marvel movies will be released in theaters in 2028. X-Men comes out on May 5, 2028, and Black Panther 3 arrives on December 15, 2028.
Ghost Rider was one of the surprise announcements during Marvel’s presentation at SDCC 2026. After fans have been manifesting the role for years, Gosling finally joins the MCU as Johnny Blaze. Shawn Levy, who helmed Deadpool & Wolverine, will direct Ghost Rider.
2028 is a busy year for Marvel with three movies, and Ghost Rider represents a pivotal moment for the MCU.
Ghost Rider’s release date is a gamble that could pay off
X-Men and Black Panther 3 are the proven commodities. Even though it’s the first X-Men movie in the MCU, audiences already know many of these characters from the Fox movies. Judging by the hype from D23, X-Men will be a highly anticipated release.
The same anticipation should be applied to Black Panther 3. Ryan Coogler has already proven he can deliver MCU hits with Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Coogler’s stock is soaring after Sinners, so many will want to see his next movie, which is Black Panther 3. Plus, the addition of David Jonsson as T’Challa’s son is an intriguing decision that fans will want to see play out.
Ghost Rider is the biggest gamble of the three. It’s sandwiched between two potential behemoths in X-Men and Black Panther 3. Could Marvel be overexposing itself in 2028? The last time Marvel released three movies in one year was 2025. Thunderbolts* was the second release that year and ended up being the lowest-grossing of the three at $382 million worldwide. Could a similar trajectory happen for Ghost Rider?
Frankly, Marvel needs its smaller properties, a.k.a. its non-Avengers and Spider-Man movies, to be hits. That’s how the MCU will survive in the future. Not everything can be an event like Avengers: Doomsday with dozens of MCU characters and massive stakes. That’s an unsustainable formula. Marvel needs new franchises built around its secondary characters, similar to what it once had with The Guardians of the Galaxy and Doctor Strange.
Despite being the riskiest proposition of the three, Ghost Rider has the chance to reap the biggest rewards. Having Gosling, an A-list star with global appeal, and Levy, a successful blockbuster director, tied to Ghost Rider is a smart decision. If Ghost Rider works, it could keep Gosling and Levy together in the MCU for years to come.
The addition of Ghost Rider opens the door to more stories and characters. Perhaps a Midnight Sons movie could be the Ghost Rider sequel if the latter hits. Ghost Rider’s presence also makes a Mephisto sighting in MCU movies more likely.
It might not be as popular as X-Men or Black Panther, but Ghost Rider might be the biggest winner of 2028 if things go right.
