A Boston crime thriller from 2010 is getting another shot at the spotlight, nearly 16 years after its theatrical debut. The movie has secured an impressive ranking among HBO Max’s top 10 movies in the United States, putting its bank-robbing crew back in front of a fresh streaming audience.
The Town finds new audience on streaming
According to Flix Patrol, The Town is No. 7 on HBO Max’s top 10 movie list. The story follows Doug MacRay, a career criminal played by Ben Affleck, who begins to question his life after his crew takes bank manager Claire Keesey hostage. Doug secretly falls for Claire while FBI agent Adam Frawley, portrayed by Jon Hamm, closes in. Jeremy Renner plays Doug’s volatile friend James Coughlin, with Rebecca Hall and Blake Lively also starring.
Affleck pulled double duty as star and director, working from a screenplay credited to Peter Craig, Aaron Stockard, and himself. Graham King and Basil Iwanyk produced the film for Warner Bros., with GK Films and Thunder Road Film among its production companies. The movie reached U.S. theaters on September 17, 2010, and carried a reported $37 million production budget.
Commercially, the film was not a flop. It opened with about $23.8 million domestically before finishing with roughly $92.2 million in North America and $154 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). That performance gave the relatively modestly budgeted thriller a solid theatrical run rather than leaving it as a forgotten release.
Critics also gave the movie plenty of love. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists a 92% critics’ score and an 85% audience score, with reviewers praising its tension, writing, and ensemble. On IMDB, the movie holds a 7.5 rating. In addition, Renner’s portrayal made Coughlin one of the film’s standout performances and earned him an Oscar nomination for the role.
Now, streaming has handed the crime drama another moment in the sun. Its HBO Max ranking suggests that fans remain drawn to the gritty Boston setting, escalating heists, complicated characters, and Affleck’s grounded direction.
