A man currently attempting working on a Ferrari 512 BBi has said that trying to restore its rusty parts has led to a shocking result.

YouTuber Ratarossa has been working hard to restore the 512 BBi supercar that was recovered from outside a barn.

The car had sat for over 12 years, and it was a mess, but the owner hoped the restoration wouldn’t be too complex.

The reality was very different, and it showed how hard it can be to restore rusty car parts.

What condition was this Ferrari 512 BBi in?

Having sat outside for around 12 years, it was clear that this Ferrari needed some work to get back on the road again.

It took an additional six months for Ratarossa to convince the owner to sell the car, but eventually he did.

A good clean certainly made the car look a lot better, but that was only half the story.

Some of that work wasn’t too major.

The rear brake calipers, for example, had been installed with the bleed nipples facing downward, making bleeding the brakes impossible.

The front calipers had also been installed on the wrong sides, so that was something else that needed fixing.

But it was the rust on the Ferrari that was the bigger problem.

Rust revealed deeper problems with the Ferrari

“The exhaust system on the BBi is rather complex,” said Ratarossa.

Thankfully, an original BBi parts manual gave Ratarossa an idea of how the system worked.

“We’ve got two side mufflers, two main mufflers, and then we’ve got four manifolds on the car,” said the YouTuber.

They had all suffered badly, but Ratarossa was determined to restore them to keep the car as original as possible.

A team at CSP cleaned and blasted the exhaust components, and that exposed all sorts of problems.

This included previous repairs, with large plates welded over corroded parts of the exhaust.

These repairs trapped moisture in the system, causing even more corrosion than first feared.

Was the rusty Ferrari 512 BBi exhaust system saved?

Specialist welding ensured the exhaust system got back to the YouTuber, looking almost as good as new.

The components were then given a coating of Cerakote, designed to protect the system and make it more durable.

“Absolutely better than new,” said Ratarossa upon seeing the restored exhaust.

As these can cost upwards of £15,000 or $20,000, it has saved Ratarossa a lot of money.

That is really what this restoration is all about. Keeping this Ferrari 512 BBi as original as possible, so as not to lose the spirit of the car.

While the rust was bad, it showed that even the worst-looking components can sometimes be salvaged.
