ATLANTA – When Switzerland international Breel Embolo looks back on his controversial red card against Argentina during the World Cup quarter-finals, he remembers the pain and anger his team felt and how it “it hurt like crazy”.
Embolo was shown a second yellow card for simulation in the second half of Argentina’s 3-1 win on July 11 in Kansas City. At the time the score was 1-1 and Switzerland had equalized just minutes prior. Embolo was given a free-kick and Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes was booked for the challenge.
The Video Assistant Referee recommended a review of the foul after replay showed that there had been no contact from Paredes on Embolo. Following a review, the Swiss player was shown a yellow card for diving and sent off. Paredes’ yellow was overturned.
It was the most high-profile application of the new mistaken identity rule at the tournament.
“As a player, of course, we were angry because we knew that we could win or we had the chance to win if we stayed with 11 (players),” he said, as he was introduced as Atlanta United’s new No. 9 following a reported $18 million transfer from Ligue 1 side Rennes.
“Of course it touched me. It touched my team. That’s always the most important thing. The referee decided to do it like that. But yeah, it’s a part of sport.”
Twelve days after the World Cup final, the International Football Association Board said that mistaken identity should not be used in instances of simulation. Asked if that post-World Cup decision changes how he views his sending off, Embolo answered emphatically.
“No. We lost. I’m a competitor,” he said. “But as a player, if you know how difficult it is to get there, get in the situation and to create a group, it’s hard to accept. It’s hard to accept because you know how hard it is to come in there and play. The next chance could be in four years. You don’t know. That’s the hardest thing to accept. Not if it’s a red card or not.”
Embolo’s reaction to his sending off was one of the lasting images of the World Cup. He was inconsolable and the decision clearly impacted the result of the match. Embolo now finds himself back in the U.S. where he’ll continue his club career in MLS. Atlanta United has struggled this season and currently sits 12th in the Eastern Conference, but has one three games in a row.
“I didn’t think that I would be here four months ago,” Embolo admitted. “But for me it was decisive. (Atlanta United) knows me as a player and as a man already. I think the league grew up,” Embolo said of MLS. “It’s a part of the process if you see the (U.S.) national team. We played them last year. So it’s a development. You need to have time. I know in football you don’t have a lot of time.”
