Klay Thompson has spent much of his career being discussed alongside the greatest shooters in NBA history. But when the comparison is Ray Allen, Thompson does not take the company for granted.
Thompson recently reflected on Allen’s influence on his own game, explaining that both Allen and Reggie Miller helped provide the blueprint for the off-ball movement that eventually became one of Thompson’s defining skills.
“Of course I like those comparisons. I love Ray Allen. Are you kidding me? Him and Reggie were the blueprint for my whole off ball formula. It gives me chills I’m even in the same sentence as Ray, because if you told me this my rookie season, I would’ve never believed you. Ray has one of the greatest shots in history and I still practice that back pedal drill he did in Game 6 of 2013. I love those comparisons.”

The connection between the two players goes deeper than three-point totals.
Allen became one of basketball’s most influential movement shooters through constant relocation, conditioning and meticulous preparation. Thompson later became a centerpiece of Golden State’s offense using many of the same principles, punishing defenses by sprinting around screens, relocating after giving up the ball and requiring attention even when he never touched it.
That approach helped Thompson build one of the greatest shooting résumés the league has seen. Now with Miami, the five-time All-Star and four-time NBA champion ranks fourth on the NBA’s all-time list for made three-pointers.
Yet the detail Thompson singled out from Allen’s career was not a statistical milestone. It was preparation for one specific moment.
Allen’s legendary three-pointer in Game 6 of the 2013 NBA Finals came after Chris Bosh secured an offensive rebound and found him retreating toward the right corner. Allen backpedaled behind the three-point line without looking down, caught the pass and tied the game with 5.2 seconds remaining. Miami eventually won in overtime and then captured Game 7 against San Antonio.
That footwork was hardly accidental. Allen had repeatedly practiced a drill designed to prepare him for exactly that type of chaotic situation; getting up, retreating quickly to the perimeter and locating the three-point line without needing to look at his feet. Thompson says he still incorporates that backpedal drill into his own training.
It is a revealing detail from one legendary shooter about another.
Thompson may now occupy the same historical conversations as Allen and Miller, but his comments show that he still sees himself partly as the student who studied their movement and preparation long before he became an NBA star.
