Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta’s hopes of a move away this summer are in doubt after he sustained a hamstring injury.
Mateta will miss Palace’s first home game of the season on Friday night against Manchester City after picking up the injury during training and he is expected to be out for around four weeks, according to sources briefed on the problem who speak anonymously as they were not authorised to do so publicly.
The France international is disaffected at Palace and desperate for a move away, with an offer from Aston Villa being rejected this week as it fell considerably short of their valuation for him.
Mateta is also in dispute with the club, having argued that an option clause to trigger a year’s extension to his contract was invalid, but, while the outcome was not made public, sources briefed on the case, speaking on the condition of anonymity to protect relationships, told The Athletic an independent tribunal determined earlier this year that the contract did in fact remain valid. They ruled in Palace’s favour.
He then took his case to FIFA who determined that it was not within its jurisdiction to hear the case.

Mateta, 29, has had several new contract offers on the table throughout 2024 and 2025 but has rejected them and made clear his preference is to be playing elsewhere.
In January, Nottingham Forest made a £35m offer for him but Palace accepted an offer worth more than €30m (£26m; $35.6m) from AC Milan before the Italian side pulled out of the deal due to concerns after medical checks.
Mateta had a knee problem which affected him last season and opted to not undergo surgery in an attempt to make Didier Deschamps’ France squad for the World Cup, something which he succeeded in doing, playing a small number of minutes across the tournament in the summer.

Despite his dispute, manager Pierre Sage says Mateta is committed to playing for Palace.
“I have a guy that is funny, happy to be here,” Sage said in his press conference on Wednesday previewing the match with Man City.
“He gives his best in every session. I didn’t see a player who has a problem with the club or with us, that’s why he played the last game as a starter. You imagine if we had a problem with him, he would not play as a starter. Now it is just a problem that will be resolved. It is maybe (the problem) with the man but not with the player.
“I think he will stay. He has the behaviour of someone who is happy to be here, who wants to be here and prepared to be here all season
“It’s clear. He prefers football to his contract. When you love to play, you play.”
Mateta is in the final year of his contract at Palace, triggered by that extension last season after he rejected multiple offers of a new deal.
Palace have been open to selling but were also prepared to keep him as an important part of their squad and allow him to see out his contract and leave on a free next June, something that now seems increasingly likely.
