RIP, Tim Curry, one of the funniest and most talented actors I’ve ever seen. You could name a dozen of his roles and claim it’s his best. He was so talented. But if I may suggest something, go back and watch “Clue” at some point this weekend. He’ll be missed.
Position rankings
The Bounce’s top 40 shooting guards
Rankings! I love doing them, and you love dumping on them! Every August (for the second year in a row) I’ve put out the Top 40 position rankings in a positionless NBA. I’ve already done big men and lead guards. I’m 2-for-2 in getting those lists completely correct, as long as you don’t look at the comments or replies on social media.
Now I’m headed to the other part of the backcourt — the shooting guard/off-guard position! While some of these guys could definitely qualify as lead guards, I tried to keep everything based on where their minutes were logged or how it felt like the team was trying to build the roster. This list is split into seven tiers.

Edwards is clearly the NBA’s best shooting guard, and that’s not a knock on Booker or Mitchell. There is plenty of argument for Mitchell over Booker, but defense side swings it slightly in Book’s favor.
- Reaves almost catapulted above Bane, but again … defense.
- White was ranked as a lead guard last year, but his minutes are primarily at the off-guard position. Also, he’s awesome.
- Castle takes a big leap, just like he did on the court in Year 2. He’s one of the best two-way players in the league.
- I still believe LaVine can be super effective with his offense. He’s just overpaid at nearly $49 million this season.
- Vassell feels underrated in a lot of ways. Maybe some would classify him as a wing.
- I will always be a Powell fan and am excited to see what he does in Chicago.
Hart was really difficult to keep out of the top 10, and maybe I’ll regret not having him over Powell and Vassell. He’s the ultimate glue guy in the backcourt. In Tier 4, there is so much defense. And RJ Barrett.
- I think Edgecombe is going to have some unimpressive numbers overall, but his play with this loaded 76ers lineup will be tremendous.
- Peterson has the opportunity to take over the backcourt reins in Utah and have a massive impact right away.
- Dosunmu took a major step forward and figures prominently into Minnesota’s plan.
- Coward delivered on all of the pre-draft hype. He just needs to be a more consistent outside shooter.
I’m probably most interested in the players who fell to Tier 6, Green and Beal. Green was injured much of last season, and fitting next to Dillon Brooks and Booker will be paramount to his success. Beal is coming back from a hip fracture and wants to show he’s still got it. But I’m not sure that will be his role for the Clippers.
- The 36-year-old Thompson has been declining since missing two straight seasons, but he’s still a 39 percent 3-point shooter getting out of bed.
- I want to see Tre Johnson have a monster second season with all that talent next to him.
- Sharpe fell dramatically because of a knee injury that will sideline him for six months.
- The shooting guard I will probably regret not ranking is Max Strus or Isaiah Joe. Brayden Burries having a strong rookie campaign would qualify too.

We’ve had you vote for the best ’80s basketball poster this offseason, and now it’s time for the semifinals. First up: Chuck Person’s “The Rifleman” vs. Moses Malone’s “Moses” poster.
Person beat out Dale Ellis’ “The Silent Assassin,” and Moses beat out Karl Malone’s “The Mailman” earlier this month. Which one goes to the championship?
(By the way, Michael Jordan’s frame-by-frame poster beat Larry Bird’s “Bird Nest” poster by taking 59 percent of the vote last week. MJ moves on to face George Gervin’s “Iceman” next week.)

Dolly’s world
We lost a true legend
As long-time Bouncers know, sometimes we dip outside the basketball world. We all have celebrities that we love. Celebrities we never met. People who inspired us or made us feel some kind of way whenever we saw them or consumed their work. Dolly Parton, who died earlier this week at 80, was one of those celebrities for me. She was one of the most impressive people to ever grace this earth.
A fact people love to throw out about her is that she wrote the songs “I Will Always Love You” and “Jolene” on the same day. Not like the same date a year or five apart. The same exact day. That would be like Shohei Ohtani going 4-for-4 with four home runs and pitching a complete game with 15 strikeouts in the same game. And it’s an impressive bit of trivia about Dolly. But she was also so much more.
I’ve watched just about every interview with her I could find over the years. She had the best outlook on life. She didn’t believe in regretsbecause they shaped the person she became. Dolly said she worked without fear because this was all fun for her. She came from nothing, so she “had everything to gain and nothing to lose.”
Watch her present Whitney Houston with the Grammy for “I Will Always Love You” and see the pure joy from Dolly. Dolly could take any song and make it her own, like “House of the Rising Sun.” Her cover of the Collective Soul’s “Shine” is probably my favorite cover of all time. Listen to her deliver that very subtle “yeah” and try not to get goosebumps.
She wrote the most famous song about working, “9-to-5,” and “pour myself a cup of ambition” is one of the greatest modern lyrical creations. She also starred in the movie “9-to-5,” which is one of the best comedies of the ’80s. She conquered music. She was great in film, including “Rhinestone,” in which she carried Sylvester Stallone in every scene. Dolly even delivered one of the funniest David Letterman Top 10 Lists.
We don’t know most of those we admire from afar, but I feel confident we lost one of the best people and inspirations around. Rest in Peace, Dolly. You were a true one-of-one.
