Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has questioned the professionalism of the fourth official in his side’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest on Saturday because of the length of time it took to input the correct shirt numbers into the substitutions board.
Iraola had been attempting to introduce three players shortly before a controversial penalty was awarded on 70 minutes when goalkeeper Alisson brought down Forest’s Neco Williams inside the box after a quick throw-in.
He was angry at the time it had taken to process the planned changes as fourth official Tim Robinson was unable to flash up the substitutes’ numbers due to a malfunctioning electronic board.
“I cannot explain because I don’t have an explanation,” Iraola said after the game, before telling its UK broadcaster TNT Sports: “A professional fourth official cannot take three minutes. We’d already given him the subs two or three minutes before. I was already angry because in the previous stoppage we couldn’t make the subs and then before the throw-in I thought we could do it.”

At full time, Alisson kicked one of the boards in anger. The club’s vice-captain was raging following the penalty decision, which upset Liverpool’s players and Iraola as it came during a time when they were trying to make changes.
Alisson was booked on the pitch for his protests and couldn’t hold back at the end of the game as Liverpool had to settle for another point after also drawing their opening game of the season 2-2 away to Newcastle United last Sunday.

After Liverpool’s draw with Nottingham Forest, head coach Andoni Iraola complained that the fourth official took too long to put the substitutes’ numbers on the boards as he prepared to make a triple change in the lead-up to the penalty that put the visitors 2-1 up.
The Spaniard said the official “cannot take three minutes” to perform that task. The delay meant Forest could take a quick throw-in which led to the awarding of the penalty.
We’ll have to take his word for the time it took Tim Robinson to get prepared. Alisson, the Liverpool goalkeeper, later kicked out at one of the boards in frustration.
But in mitigation, the substitutes boards currently in use are not fit for purpose.
Each shirt number has to be entered manually, and the boards only count up one at a time. Entering No 38 (for Ryan Gravenberch, who was one of the Liverpool subs) on its own could take you several seconds, and when a manager is making three changes at once, there are six numbers to put in.

Also, the sponsors’ advertising attached to the boards makes them heavy and unwieldy, which is why the fourth official has them on the ground in the image at the top of this article. In UEFA competitions, clubs have to enter the shirt numbers themselves, which means they can get the subs done quicker. The Premier League only did this during the pandemic.
As I agreed with someone on X, we don’t need them any more. And if we do, get the clubs to do it, or not bother. Announce the changes via the pitchside advertising hoardings instead.
There’s no need for all this at all. If the club make a mistake, it’s on them.
