Anne Hathaway joins Tom Cruise’s Days of Thunder 2 for a 2028 release
Paramount Pictures has cast Anne Hathaway opposite Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder 2. Cruise revealed the casting on Saturday through his social media accounts. He posted a photo showing both actors posing beside a NASCAR vehicle in Daytona.
The sequel has locked in a June 2, 2028 theatrical release date. Filmmakers will shoot the project for IMAX, with Dolby, 4DX and premium formats also planned. Hathaway will reportedly portray a team owner and engineer in the racing follow-up.
Jonathan Levine has signed on to helm the project for Paramount. The studio has fast-tracked the sequel as Cruise’s next major production. Cruise will reprise his role as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle from the 1990 original.
Will Staples wrote the screenplay, while Cruise produces with Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper. The late Tony Scott directed the first Days of Thunder, which debuted during summer 1990. That film grossed $82.6 million domestically and pulled in $157.9 million at the global box office.
Robert Towne scripted the original, which followed a brash rookie stock car racer breaking into NASCAR. The production also brought Cruise and Nicole Kidman together as a couple for 11 years. They went on to collaborate in Far and Away and Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut.
Cruise developed the original story, with Don Simpson and Bruckheimer serving as producers. Robert Duvall, Randy Quaid, Cary Elwes, Caroline Williams and Michael Rooker rounded out the first film’s cast. Specific story details for the sequel remain undisclosed beyond Hathaway’s character.
Hathaway recently appeared in The Devil Wears Prada 2, The Odyssey and The End of Oak Street. Her next project, Verity, arrives in theaters this October. CAA and Entertainment 360 handle her representation.
