Everton are in preliminary talks with Monaco over United States men’s national team striker Folarin Balogun.
The Athletic reported in June that the 25-year-old was expected to leave Monaco this summer, with talks having not taken place over a contract extension.
Balogun has two years remaining on his existing deal with the Ligue 1 club.
Everton have been in the market for a striker, with doubts over the future of Beto. The Merseyside club and Fiorentina are progressing over a potential deal for the 28-year-old, who is due in Florence for a medical on Monday.
If the Guinea-Bissau striker were to leave, that would leave Thierno Barry as the only senior recognised striker remaining in David Moyes’s squad.

Everton have signed wide forwards Brennan Johnson and Tyrique George on permanent deals this summer. There is also an agreement in principle in place to re-sign Richarlison from Tottenham Hotspur, with Iliman Ndiaye going the other way.
Balogun scored 31 goals in 91 appearances across all competitions for Monaco. He had an impressive World Cup on home soil, finishing as the USMNT’s top scorer with three goals in four appearances.
After being sent off in his side’s round of 32 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina, Balogun’s standard one-game ban was suspended by FIFA, which followed a call from President Donald Trump to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, with the decision drawing widespread criticism. He subsequently featured in the round of 16 match against Belgium, which the U.S. lost 4-1.
Balogun scored twice in the United States’ 4-1 group-stage victory over Paraguay, becoming the first USMNT player since 1930 to score a brace in a World Cup match. The striker was born in Brooklyn and later chose to represent the country of his birth after playing for England at various youth levels.
Balogun joined Arsenal’s academy at the age of eight and progressed through the club’s youth system. He made 10 senior appearances for Arsenal and spent time on loan at Middlesbrough before joining Reims for the 2022-23 season.
Balogun scored 22 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions during his season at Reims, prompting Monaco to sign him on a permanent deal the following summer for an initial €30million, with a further €10m in add-ons (£34.5m; $45.6m at current exchange rates).
Strap yourselves in, Everton fans
Analysis by Everton correspondent Patrick Boyland
It’s safe to say the last few days at Everton have been lively, as the club gears up for a busy end to the window. They are spinning multiple plates and trying to balance incomings with outgoings, all while attempting to improve manager David Moyes’ squad.
A £40million deal to sell Harrison Armstrong to Nottingham Forest was on and then off, after a last-minute change of heart from owners The Friedkin Group. The club are also working on a move to bring Richarlison back from Tottenham Hotspur, with Iliman Ndiaye heading the other way in a separate move. Those transfers are still subject to personal terms and medicals.
Beto is close to joining Fiorentina, while a move for USMNT international Balogun is being explored. The latter would be an exciting addition to an attack that has often been short of goals. And it is still possible, too, that Jack Grealish returns, with Everton and Manchester City in talks over a potential loan.
At this stage, very little can be ruled out, given the desire both to strengthen the squad and make sales. It is possible others could still depart, creating a domino effect in the market.
Strap yourselves in for a chaotic last 48 hours.
