Kendall Coyne Schofield is returning to the Minnesota Frost, signing a two-year contract with the two-time PWHL Walter Cup champions.
The Frost didn’t protect their captain from the PWHL’s lengthy expansion process in June, opting to shield goaltender Maddie Rooney and forwards Kelly Pannek and Taylor Fox (née Heise). Coyne Schofield wasn’t plucked to join an expansion team, but also didn’t immediately re-sign with the Frost, which raised questions about the 34-year-old’s future with the franchise.
On Monday, more than three months into the offseason, the team announced Coyne Schofield would indeed return through the 2027-28 season.
“My first three seasons in Minnesota have been unforgettable for my family and me,” Coyne Schofield said in a news release. “We’re thrilled to be back for the next two seasons and can’t wait to return for Season Four. I’m ready to put in the work to bring the Walter Cup back to Minnesota.”
Bringing Coyne Schofield back for another two seasons is a massive win for the Frost after losing forwards Britta Curl-Salemme — who was third in league scoring last season and signed with expansion Detroit — Abby Hustler and Katy Knoll and top offensive defenders Kendall Cooper and Mae Batherson through expansion. There is no better way to fill those voids than with Coyne Schofield, who remains one of the league’s most efficient five-on-five producers.
No player had a higher Net Rating than Coyne Schofield last season (+6.2), according to Dom Luszczyszyn’s model, including Montreal captain Marie-Philip Poulin and Pannek, who was named forward of the year. Over the last three regular seasons with the Frost, Coyne Schofield has been on the ice for 66 goals at five-on-five, which paces the PWHL, per PWHL Analytics.
Last season, Coyne Schofield was one of only three players to produce at a point-per-game clip with 23 points in 23 games. She missed seven games with an upper-body injury sustained while helping Team USA win gold at the 2026 Milan Olympics, but still ranked top 10 in league goals (12) and points (23). Only Poulin and Fox have scored more than Coyne Schofield’s 63 career points in 77 games, all scored with the Frost since the PWHL’s inaugural season in 2024.
With Coyne Schofield returning, the Frost are bringing back four of their top five scoring forwards from last season (Pannek, Fox, Grace Zumwinkle), as well as other key players including No. 1 defender Lee Stecklein and Rooney, their starting goaltender. The Frost also added to the roster at the 2026 PWHL Draft, selecting Ohio State standout defender Sara Swiderski (No. 9) and Finnish forward Viivi Vainikka (No. 21).
