The rerelease is part of Hasbro’s year-long ‘Apology Tour’ campaign, a reference to Optimus Prime’s death in the 1986 film, which famously upset a generation of fans. Legendary voice actor Peter Cullen passed away on August 26, 2026. Following his death, fans now feel that the branding of the rerelease comes across as inappropriate.

Cullen was known for voicing Optimus Prime and Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh. He passed away at the age of 85 at his home in Los Angeles. Following his sad demise, his agent Kevin Motley told The Hollywood Reporter that the Canadian voice actor “passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family — and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide.”

The animated film will return to theaters beginning September 17, 2026, for a limited 40th-anniversary engagement. It will return in a 4K remastered format. The film will also include an all-new post-credits cinematic chapter created exclusively for the theatrical event.
