SAN FRANCISCO — Stephen Curry can sign a contract extension with the Golden State Warriors whenever he wants. The window to do so opened Saturday. As one of the most famous people on the planet, the 38-year-old superstar will continue to find himself in the spotlight as questions about his NBA future hover in the distance.
On Sunday, he spoke at an event on the University of San Francisco’s campus. On Monday, he was at a golf tournament that benefits his family’s Eat.Learn.Play Foundation. Later this month, he’ll tour China to promote his new shoes with footwear brand Li-Ning. The spotlight is always on Curry, and he doesn’t shy away from it given that he is one of the universally beloved pitchmen in the game and has plenty of causes he likes to highlight.
In the midst of discussing some of those, Curry was asked about the looming extension, and he reiterated what he has said for years.
“There’s no question I want to be here the rest of my career,” Curry told NBC Sports Bay Area. “And I’m pretty sure that’s going to happen.
“The deal and the contract stuff will happen at the right time,” he added, “and we’re not letting it be a distraction from our preparation for the season and the fact that the team we’re coming back with has a lot of familiarity.”

Curry’s current deal, worth $62.6 million in 2026-27, expires after the season. He is eligible to sign an extension for up to two additional years and just under $137 million due to the NBA’s over-38 rule.
As usual, Curry has all the control in this situation. He can sign the extension whenever he’d like and put any potential distraction to rest as soon as he does. He knows the media game inside and out, which is why he chooses his words carefully when discussing these matters. He understands the power he holds within the Warriors organization, and how that is viewed throughout the rest of the league.
His pending extension is not yet a distraction because he and Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy have repeatedly said they believe they’ll be able to get one done. The only way the situation would become a distraction is if he doesn’t sign a new deal before the NBA season begins in late October.
At that point, questions would start to pile up as the Warriors road-trip through various NBA markets, with fans hoping that the two-time MVP might choose to join their team after the season. Curry could come out with an even more forceful statement at some point between now and opening night, perhaps saying something like: “I’m not going anywhere. I’m a Warrior for life.” But those questions will resurface if the Warriors start slow again this season, or if Curry, who was limited to just 43 games in 2025-26 because of injuries, is still dealing with the runner’s knee that hampered him late last season.
Curry might just want to see how the roster comes together between now and the end of the year, allowing Dunleavy more time and flexibility to find the right mix of players to give the Warriors one more chance at a title. The franchise will have an abundance of cap space next summer, with veterans such as Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green coming off the books. Whether or not they re-sign them — or agree on a contract extension with fourth-year guard Brandin Podziemski before the start of this season — remains to be seen. Either way, the Warriors have the space and future draft picks to make a major move or two, if they desire.
Regardless, Curry may not want the conversation surrounding his new deal to be a distraction, but he knows that the questions about his future won’t fully stop until he signs on the dotted line.
