Victor Miller, who wrote the screenplay for the 1980 slasher landmark Friday the 13th, has passed away at the age of 86. His son, Ian, confirmed his death on Monday in Alameda, California. Miller transformed the horror genre with his iconic script. Before 1980, the summer camp setting was not yet a common backdrop for American horror films. After the release of Friday the 13th, it became synonymous with themes of isolation, vulnerability, and violence. The film created a massive franchise, but Miller remained associated only with the original film.

In a previous interview with a Friday the 13th fan site, Miller explained his approach. He stated that the concept began as an attempt to emulate Halloween. The summer camp setting gave him what he needed: young adults cut off from all adult help. The backstory of Jason’s death before the film begins also mirrored the concept of a prior evil found in Carpenter’s work. The remaining story elements flowed from that location. Campers would get picked off one by one by a protective mother—a twist that separated the film from its masked-killer competitors.
That twist gave the genre one of its most unexpected villains. Miller did not write the sequels that turned Jason Voorhees into an icon. His contribution stayed rooted in the original story, where grief and madness drove the violence.
However, Victor Miller built a long career in daytime television. He wrote for All My Children, One Life to Live, Another World, Guiding Light, and General Hospital. His work on All My Children helped the show earn three Daytime Emmy Awards for outstanding drama series writing team.
Born in New Orleans in 1940, Miller spent decades shaping stories across genres. But Friday the 13th remains his most enduring cultural footprint. He is survived by his wife, Tina Thurston Miller, and sons Ian and Josh (via Variety).
