Premier League 2 is back in action and the best young academy prospects are going head-to-head once more in the hope they will get their breakthrough to first team football if they can impress.
Thirty-one teams are competing this season in a unique format and with just two games gone, only four teams have a 100 per cent record.
One of them is Brentford, who followed up an opening day 3-2 win at Stoke City with a 5-1 victory over Sunderland on Monday.
One player has scored half of Brentford’s goals this season — a striker who hasn’t come through the academy ranks, but was signed in January and has already made his first-team debut.
This season could be the campaign where he gets more opportunities if he can maintain his great start to the season.

The backstory
Furo comes from a footballing family as the son of former Nigeria international centre-back Iyenemi Furo.
He was born in Belgium and started within the academy at Royal Antwerp, one of his father’s former clubs, before joining Club Brugge’s youth setup in 2017.
In 2022, at the age of 15, he signed his first professional contract — a five-year deal — and made his professional debut a year later in the Challenger Pro League as a substitute against SK Lommel.
He then made his senior team debut for Brugge as a substitute in the 6-0 Champions League qualifying thrashing of Rangers in August last year.

His first goal in the Jupiler League came last December against Sint-Truiden, and the following month Brentford made their move to sign him in an £8million deal.
“Kaye is someone we have tracked for a while that we are really excited about bringing to the club,” Brentford manager Keith Andrews told the official club website. “His attributes are ones that I like and feel we can develop within the environment we have created. I have no doubt he will be a big player for us.”
Furo made his Brentford debut in the 1-0 FA Cup fourth-round win over Macclesfield Town last season.
He has been capped by Belgium at every level from under-15s through to under-21s.
What we saw
At 6ft 3in, Furo is well equipped to be a target man, and as The Athletic noted in his display in the defeat of Sunderland under-21s, he is capable of playing that role. But there is much more to his game.
He is certainly strong aerially and defends the near post at set pieces as well, but it was his willingness to run in behind opposition defences and play on the shoulder of the last defender that stood out as he scored a hat-trick.
It took him just 16 seconds to score as Brentford turned the ball over in midfield from Sunderland’s kick-off and Furo latched onto a through ball, outpaced the last defender and rounding the ‘keeper to score.

He then turned provider for the second, as he held off and turned his marker to run at the Sunderland defence before unselfishly slipping a pass to team-mate Fabio Carvalho to score.
Furo’s physicality was a real issue for the Sunderland defence, and he added his second from a corner, although he didn’t need to use his size to score, due to poor marking. It was a simple sidefoot volley.
Pace and power are a deadly combination, and he demonstrated both for his hat-trick goal as the Sunderland defence could not handle him as he latched onto a long ball forward. He rolled his marker again and raced towards goal before applying a neat finish with his right foot.
It was an impressive display and invited the question: Is PL2 football enough for Furo at this stage? Does he need a bigger challenge?
The Athletic decided to look at one of his international displays for Belgium’s under-19s, a goalless draw with Denmark in March.
The same attributes were on show in terms of his ability to be an outlet for his teammates and his general link-up play was good, although his finishing wasn’t as high quality as against Sunderland, as he missed a great chance to score with pretty much an open goal.

However, his work rate caught the eye, especially his desire to track back into midfield and unsettle the Danish midfielders, as well as his constant desire to run channels.
On this evidence, with some fine-tuning, Andrews could be right and Furo could be a real asset to Brentford in the future.
Brentford’s recruitment and vision to plan have been at the core of the club’s success. Furo could even step up and eventually replace Igor Thiago one day, another central striker who has flourished at Brentford after being signed by Club Brugge.
