There is something happening in Belgium when it comes to goalkeepers.

Thibaut Courtois, Maarten Vandevoordt of RB Leipzig, Manchester United’s Senne Lammens and Chelsea’s Mike Penders are just some of the names to have emerged from a country that has become remarkably efficient at producing young goalkeepers for Europe’s elite clubs. And at the centre of that production line are Genk, whose goalkeeping academy has developed into one of the most respected anywhere across the continent.

Its latest graduate is Lucca Brughmans.

Liverpool have agreed a deal for the 18-year-old that could reach around £30million, making him the most expensive teenage ’keeper ever. He had also reportedly attracted interest from more of the biggest clubs across Europe, and Liverpool’s decision to sign him now and leave him at Genk on loan for the rest of the season tells you everything about how they view the player they have bought.

This is not a signing of a finished product. It is a bet on what Brughmans can become.

Naturally, his size has already led to comparisons with Courtois, who also came through the ranks at Genk before Chelsea signed him at age 19. At 6ft 6in (198cm) tall with long limbs and an enormous reach, the physical similarities are obvious. But while there are elements of the Real Madrid and Belgium No 1 in his game, Brughmans is not simply a young version of his compatriot. His physical profile is similar but the way he moves and solves problems in goal give him a skill set that is distinctly his own.

Watching Brughmans, the first thing that stands out is not actually his height: it is how little being that size seems to restrict him.

Tall goalkeepers have traditionally had to deal with a particular technical problem. The bigger your frame, the more distance there is to cover when getting down to the ground. A goalkeeper who is 6ft 6in has further to travel than a 6ft 2in one when a shot is hit low and close to the body, and requires them to drop quickly. Brughmans is unusually good at eliminating that disadvantage.

He is incredibly quick for his size, but the more interesting quality is his flexibility. There is a looseness to the way he moves that allows him to manipulate his long limbs rather than fight against them. He can change his body shape quickly, get his hands down, and orientate himself around the ball in a way that is not typical for a ’keeper of his size. That is what makes his shot-stopping so intriguing.

On closer-range shots, Brughmans often adopts a wide base with his chest slightly forward and his arms relatively low. It is a technique that will again remind you of Courtois, but the reason it works is more fundamental than the visual similarity.

He is already occupying so much of the goal due to his size. When his positioning is good, Brughmans does not need to make a spectacular save because his body is already taking away so much of the target. Shots hit close to him can disappear into his chest, legs or feet, while his frame becomes part of the save.

This is one of the great advantages of being a huge goalkeeper, but it only works if they can still move quickly enough to deal with everything outside of that initial blocking zone. Importantly, Brughmans can.

His agility allows him to make the explosive movements that you would normally associate with a smaller ’keeper, while his frame gives him the natural coverage of a much bigger one.

That combination is rare.

This athleticism does, however, make his handling an especially interesting area of development.

Brughmans currently gives up more rebounds than you would want from a goalkeeper operating at the highest level. He is often able to make the initial save but the ball can remain alive, particularly when he has to extend away from his body to reach it. In Belgium, those second chances are not always punished. In the Premier League, they will be.

The encouraging part for Liverpool is that Brughmans already has the physical tools to improve in this area, most notably a pair of enormous hands. If he can learn to use them to absorb and control more of the shots he currently parries away, handling could eventually become another major strength rather than a weakness in his game.

Current No 1 Alisson’s greatness for Liverpool is not only about the spectacular saves. One of the defining characteristics of his goalkeeping is his ability to turn shots into possession. He catches and absorbs an extraordinary number of balls that others would parry away.

That is the next step for Brughmans.

He already has the physical tools. The challenge is developing the technique and strength through the hands, wrists and arms to control the ball rather than simply stopping it. He has the potential to develop toward that level of control.

Brughmans’ work outside of protecting his own goal is equally interesting.

The young man is comfortable enough playing short and has the technical quality you would expect from a goalkeeper developed at Genk, where he has made 16 senior appearances, but his biggest weapon is his ability to play over opposition pressure.

His kicking has the combination of distance and accuracy required to bypass a high press and immediately turn a defensive phase into an attacking one. He can find a striker’s body, allowing them to secure the ball and either turn or lay it off to an advancing team-mate, and can also go wider, to find wingers running beyond the opposition’s back line.

Then there is his arm.

Brughmans can throw the ball a long way, and do so accurately enough to initiate attacks before the other team has had time to reset. It is another quality Liverpool supporters will recognise from Alisson, whose ability to release the ball quickly with his hands has become an important part of their transition game.

But there is a reason the Premier League club are leaving Brughmans in Belgium for another season: he needs matches.

Brughmans only made his senior Genk debut in April, then finished the season as first-choice and has started the opening five league matches of this campaign. Returning to Genk to play for the rest of 2026-27 should prove valuable.

For a goalkeeper, training can only take you so far. There are in-game situations that cannot be recreated there, regardless of how sophisticated the session is: the feeling of making a mistake in front of thousands of people, the decision to come for a cross when the match is on the line; the concentration required to defend a one-goal lead for the final 10 minutes; the psychological response to conceding a goal and having to make another save 30 seconds later.

Gameday is different for goalkeepers. It is where technique, decision-making, concentration and personality are tested simultaneously. Brughmans seems to understand the responsibility that comes with the position, too. He captained Belgium at both the Under-17 European Championship and World Cup last year, and led the under-19s in his first two appearances at that level in March. Genk have also highlighted his leadership qualities, including his captaincy of their own under-19 side.

That matters.

Goalkeeping is the only position where you can be directly responsible for organising an entire defensive line while simultaneously being the last player between the other team and the goal. A ’keeper who communicates, demands information and controls the space in front of them can make everyone around them better.

The final piece of Brughmans’ development will be physical.

At 6ft 6in, he is remarkably lean, and his body has plenty of maturing to do before he is ready for the physical demands of Premier League football. The challenge will be adding strength without sacrificing the mobility that makes him so interesting in the first place.

That balance is crucial.

Make him stronger, but do not make him slower. Add mass, but preserve the flexibility. Develop his handling, but do not take away his aggressiveness. Improve his ability to absorb shots while maintaining the explosive movement that allows him to cover the goal despite his size.

Because that is ultimately what Liverpool are buying. Not simply a 6ft 6in goalkeeper but someone who moves like he is 6ft 2in, occupies the goal like he is 6ft 6in, has the distribution to beat a press, the personality to lead a defensive line and the physical tools to potentially develop into one of Europe’s best.

There will be mistakes along the way. The small sample of senior football he’s had to date means we still do not know exactly how he will respond when the pressure increases and the margin for error disappears, but that is the point of the investment.

Liverpool are not paying up to £30million for the goalkeeper Brughmans is today. They are paying for the possibility of what he can become.
