Kawhi Leonard’s expected return to the Toronto Raptors remains unfinished, and the latest holdup reportedly has more to do with the Los Angeles Clippers’ leadership situation than the trade itself.
According to Jake Fischer, reporting alongside Marc Stein for The Stein Line, one of the primary reasons the deal has yet to be formally completed is that the Clippers are still determining their new front-office structure following the NBA suspensions of owner Steve Ballmer and president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank.
The uncertainty comes after the NBA handed Los Angeles sweeping penalties stemming from its investigation into salary-cap circumvention involving Leonard. Ballmer was suspended for one year, while Frank received a six-month suspension. The Clippers were also fined $30 million and stripped of five future first-round draft picks from 2029 through 2033. Leonard was fined $700,000.
Those sanctions have suddenly forced the franchise to establish a new decision-making hierarchy at the exact moment it is attempting to complete one of the most consequential transactions in team history.
The Leonard trade had already been held back while Toronto waited for the NBA investigation to conclude. With the league’s ruling now issued, the remaining complication appears to be administrative: Los Angeles must establish who has the authority to handle major basketball decisions while Ballmer and Frank are unavailable.
There has been no indication in the latest reporting that the Clippers and Raptors have abandoned the deal. Instead, Leonard’s move back to the franchise he led to the 2019 NBA championship remains expected to go through once Los Angeles settles its reshuffled leadership structure.
For Toronto, that means the wait continues. For the Clippers, the consequences of the NBA’s punishment are already extending well beyond fines and lost draft picks; they are affecting the franchise’s ability to conduct its most important basketball business.
