If you skipped Disclosure Day when it played in theaters—maybe Project Hail Mary was your chosen very long sci-fi movie of the season—your chance to catch it on streaming will soon be here. And better still, if you did watch Steven Spielberg’s latest extraterrestrial tale earlier this year, it’s an opportunity to go back over some of its more puzzling choices with the ability to rewind at will.
Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor co-star as strangers with a cosmic connection that’s not at all apparent at the start of the film. She’s hoping to level up from Kansas City weather girl to serious news anchor, a goal disrupted when she starts chattering in an unearthly language while live on the air; he’s just absconded with top-secret material from the shady government contractor he worked for until very recently.
Elsewhere, we meet characters played by Colman Domingo (good guy), Colin Firth (bad guy), Eve Hewson (good girlfriend), and Wyatt Russell (bad boyfriend).
As far as Spielberg’s alien epics go, Disclosure Day doesn’t capture the frightening but irresistible allure of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, nor the wonder or pathos of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial—but it’s more on the emotional wavelength of those films than his action-oriented take on War of the Worlds.
You can make up your own mind when it hits Peacock on October 9—and ponder just how many attempts you would need to smash an iPhone, or why a seemingly limitless piece of alien tech can do everything except turn invisible, while you’re at it.
