Authorities in Moscow and the surrounding Moscow region have unveiled major plans to extend the Russian capital’s metro network deep into its outer suburbs over the next decade.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced Wednesday that around 30 new metro stations will open in the next five years, followed by an additional 35 stations by 2035 — twelve of which will be built in the Moscow region.
“The quality of life will improve for 2 million Moscow residents and 3.7 million residents of the Moscow region,” Sobyanin said, noting that the Moscow metropolitan area is home to roughly 20 million people.

On Telegram, Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyov published a video showing the scale of the planned expansion into the suburban districts of Krasnogorsk, Khimki, Mytishchi, Balashikha, Odintsovo and Leninsky.
Those metro stations will serve approximately 600,000 daily commuters, Vorobyov said, cutting travel times into central Moscow by up to an hour.The governor said construction of the new lines is expected to begin after 2028.
The transit expansion marks the latest phase in the rapid development of Moscow’s metro system under Sobyanin, who has served as mayor for nearly 16 years.
