General Hospital is expanding its cast by adding a new mental health expert.
As reported by Soap Opera Digest, actress Kearran Giovanni made her official debut on the ABC soap opera as Dr. Nichols on Thursday, September 10. The GH’s fresh face steps in as Anna Devane’s (Finola Hughes) therapist. She will help the Port Charles mainstay heal after her harrowing break from reality.
For those curious about her background, Giovanni joined daytime in 2009 as Dr. Vivian Wright on One Life to Live. It was a recurring role where she worked under Executive Producer Frank Valentini, who now leads General Hospital.
As for how Dr. Nichols fits into the plot, Anna spent months in a treatment facility in France. However, instead of focusing on her recovery, she spent most of her time convincing her doctors that she was improving. She was deemed well enough to return to Port Charles. But the vision of Peter August (Wes Ramsey) followed her home and nearly drove her to murder Britt Westbourne (Kelly Thiebaud). Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) intervened just in time, and Anna broke Peter’s control by shooting at his apparition.
Now, Anna wants to take back control of her life, and she is ready to give therapy a real try. However, the show’s regular psychiatrist, Dr. Kevin Collins (Jon Lindstrom), is currently teaching in Ireland and is unavailable. So Dr. Nichols will step in to guide Anna back to stability. In her first episode, Dr. Nichols was introduced as a longtime General Hospital staff member whom viewers had not met before.
