Conor Benn and Ryan Garcia comfortably made the welterweight limit of 147 pounds at the official weigh-in at the UFC Meta Apex in Las Vegas on Friday morning. Wearing a WBC cap, Benn weighed in at 146 pounds and Garcia at 145.5 ahead of their Saturday night world title fight at T-Mobile Arena.
All the talk this week had been around Benn and his confessed struggle to come down to the 147-pound welterweight limit. “It feels like I’ve been dragged down to the pits of hell,” he told the BBC earlier this week. It’s a weight the 29-year-old has not made in 4 1/2 years, having gone up to middleweight (160 pounds) for his duo of fights against Chris Eubank Jr. in 2025.
He stated then that he wanted to come back down to welterweight to vie for a world title, and he has used the time since to do so gradually, taking on Regis Prograis at a catchweight of 150 pounds in April this year, which Benn won via unanimous decision.
At Thursday’s news conference, Garcia said he asked the Nevada State Athletic Commission to still allow them to wear 8-ounce gloves even if one or both of them came in over the welterweight limit. In Nevada, fights above welterweight change to 10-ounce gloves.
That request was seen by some as Garcia’s team believing that Benn would miss weight, something Benn said Thursday he has not done in 10 years as a professional. Garcia, meanwhile, has a history of missing weight; he was 3.2 pounds over the 140-pound limit for his fight against Devin Haney in 2024, forfeited part of his purse to ensure the fight went ahead, but lost the opportunity to win Haney’s WBC title. Garcia won the fight by majority decision, but the result was later ruled a no-contest after Garcia tested positive for the banned substance ostarine. Garcia also received a one-year suspension and a fine.
But it is Benn’s weight that has been most under discussion this week, with Garcia warning at the news conference that even if the British fighter makes it, “the real danger is his brain won’t rehydrate the correct way,” leaving him more susceptible to damage in the ring.
Benn has been confident all week of hitting a weight he has not achieved since April 2022, telling reporters Thursday: “People say, ‘Oh, you can’t go up to this weight and then go back down.’ All right, cool. Well, just watch me do it. Discipline prevails, and I will make the weight.”
Friday morning, he did just that. So did Garcia, answering some who questioned how seriously the 28-year-old is taking his opponent. The key question now is how coming down to 147 pounds will impact Benn’s abilities in the ring.
