Damian Lillard has spent his NBA career under constant scrutiny, but he says the opinions surrounding him have never carried much weight because basketball has never been the center of his entire identity.
For Lillard, the separation between the public figure and the private person has always been essential.
“Because I have a real life. I think that’s the best way to put it. I don’t live my life as Damian Lillard. I go home, I play with my kids. I go to my mom’s house. I hang out with my cousins.”
That perspective, he explained, comes from having a life that remains grounded away from the NBA. His relationships with family and longtime friends give him a sense of stability that is not dependent on his performance, reputation or the way he is discussed publicly.
“I talk to my grandmother on the phone. My uncle calls me and we talk on the phone all night about just regular stuff. I have a life that’s stable and is not based upon who I am as an NBA player. I have real friends.”
Because of that, Lillard says he has never felt compelled to adjust his life or career based on television commentary or outside criticism.
“I’m not sitting there watching TV and hearing everything they’ve got to say like, ‘Oh, I probably should do this. I probably should do that.’”
His reasoning is rooted in perspective. Lillard understands that the NBA moves quickly, and that even the biggest stars eventually stop being the center of daily conversation.
“When my career is over, y’all are not about to be talking about me. Y’all are going to be talking about Luka Dončić, Ja Morant and Jayson Tatum, or whoever.”
That reality, in his mind, makes it pointless to become overly consumed by people who only interact with a small part of his life.
“Why am I going to be sitting here overly concerned with everything that every person has to say about me when they don’t know my life?”
Lillard also pointed out that commentary is often temporary by nature. Once the cameras are off, the discussion moves on. Once a player retires, the league moves on too.
“They don’t think about me when they get off that camera. And when I’m done playing, they won’t think about me. So why are they going to be thinking about me? Why would I be concerned with it?”

That mindset helps explain why Lillard has often appeared unusually comfortable in the middle of criticism, trade speculation and changing expectations. His sense of self is not built around headlines, rankings or approval.
For Lillard, basketball is a major part of his life, but it is not the thing that gives his life meaning. That distinction has allowed him to keep outside noise in its proper place.
