Chelsea were made to work hard for a 2-2 draw with promoted Hull City at Stamford Bridge, with Joao Pedro’s second-half equaliser rescuing a point for Xabi Alonso’s side.
As they have done so many times recently, Chelsea came racing out of the blocks, as Rogers scored in the seventh minute. Chelsea cleared from a Hull corner, and won the ball back high up the pitch. Cole Palmer fed the ball to Joao Pedro who in turn found Rogers on the left. The England forward drove at the defence before striking crisply with his left foot inside Konstantinos Tzolakis’ near post.
Having been in total control, Chelsea suddenly found themselves behind, as Hull’s No 10 Mohamed Belloumi scored twice in six minutes. Both goals owed much to dismal defending from Alonso’s side.
For the first, Jorrel Hato failed to deal with a cross, letting it bounce in the area, allowing Belloumi to finish with ease. The second came from a Hull corner, with Emi Martinez coming for the ball but failing to get to it. It looked like the Argentina keeper had got away with it when Semi Ajayi’s header came back off the bar, but Oli McBurnie did well to find Belloumi at the top of the box and the Algerian forward smashed it into the net, with the help of a deflection off Levi Colwill.

Why do Chelsea keep losing control of games?
Chelsea’s inability to control games from a winning position is an issue that neither Alonso nor his players seem able to change.
A serious team does not keep giving opponents the opportunity to get back into the game as often as Chelsea do.
The statistic of conceding in 20 straight Premier League games tells its own story. Every team they face will go into a fixture believing they have a chance of finding the net right now.
But Chelsea have taken the lead in five of the six matches they have played this season and only League One club Luton Town — in the Carabao Cup — have failed to score to give them a contest.
This afternoon provided evidence of why a lack of concentration is part of the problem. Chelsea were dominating at 1-0, with applause ringing out around Stamford Bridge for their free-flowing football.

But they completely switched off after a break in play for Konstantinos Tzolakis to get some treatment. A long ball by the Hull keeper from the resulting free kick was missed, Ryan Giles hooked the ball into the area and Jorrel Hato misjudged the bounce. It allowed Mohamed Belloumi an easy shot on goal to score. It was defending more worthy of non-League football rather than Premier League.
Alonso’s recent predecessors have complained about the players’ inability to recover from setbacks and this was a reminder of that too. They were so rattled by being drawn level, Hull took advantage of them losing their heads to score again six minutes later.
It was not that much of a shock they did so because Emiliano Martinez had already made a great save to deny Lewie Coyle and Semi Ajayi headed against the bar.
Alonso did spring a surprise by starting centre-back Maxence Lacroix on the bench after five straight starts, but it is not as if he has been able to stop the flow of goals before today.
The fact Hull City pushed for a winner in the second half themselves, and could have got one, shows Chelsea are not feared.
Morgan Rogers scores again. Was £117m actually a bargain?
It should not be underestimated what a great start Morgan Rogers has made to his Chelsea career.
You would think being the most expensive British player at £117million might carry a little bit of pressure on his shoulders. Far from it.
A superb finish with his left foot in the seventh minute not only continued Chelsea’s run of taking an early lead in every league game this season, but also added another goal involvement to his impressive collection.

Rogers has already registered three goals and four assists in just six appearances for Chelsea. That record could be even better. One of his assists from the 6-3 victory over Leeds United was taken away because keeper Michael Zetterer got a slight touch on his cross before Valentin Barco scored.
Right now, it is not a case of if the 24-year-old forward will make a significant contribution in the final third but when.
Rogers continues to look like he is worth every penny. In fact, one might cheekily suggest Aston Villa undercharged the London club. People will certainly say that if he keeps these numbers up.
Can Xabi Alonso’s side challenge for the title playing like this?
Chelsea have been talked about as one of the teams that could give Arsenal a challenge in the title race. It is hard to see how when they remain as porous as this.
Are Chelsea entertaining going forward? For sure. But the balance in the team is off and that means they will continue to drop points in a manner teams that compete at the top will not do.
Losing narrowly at Arsenal 2-1 last week was no disgrace. But to follow that up with a 2-2 draw at home to newly promoted Hull City means they could already be five points behind the champions, as well as perennial contenders Manchester City, at the end of the weekend.

There were always going to be teething problems as work under Alonso gets under way. The absence of influential midfielder Moises Caicedo is a significant factor and his return can not come soon enough.
Chelsea’s minimum target is to qualify for the Champions League via a top-four or five finish this season. That is realistic. The suggestion from outside Stamford Bridge that they are ready to go toe-to-toe with Arsenal seems premature.
