The NBA has informed teams of a slight increase in its projected salary cap for the 2027-28 season, with the latest estimate now sitting at $176 million.
The new figure would represent another meaningful year-over-year jump after the league set the 2026-27 salary cap at $164.961 million. That means the current projection calls for an increase of a little more than $11 million, or roughly 6.7 percent, from one season to the next.
For front offices, even a relatively modest change in the projection matters. Teams are already planning contract extensions, future free-agent pursuits and trade structures multiple seasons in advance, and a higher cap can create additional flexibility while also increasing the value of percentage-based contracts.
The league’s luxury-tax and apron thresholds would also rise alongside the cap. For 2026-27, the tax line is set at $200.428 million, with the first apron at $209.015 million and the second apron at $221.686 million. Those thresholds are tied to the broader salary-cap system and are designed to increase proportionally over time.
That is especially important under the NBA’s current collective bargaining agreement, where the second apron has become much more than an expensive tax line. Teams operating above it face significant roster-building restrictions, including limitations on trades and other mechanisms traditionally used to add talent. League executives have said the system was created in part to prevent the highest-spending franchises from gaining too large a competitive advantage simply by outspending everyone else.
The $176 million number is still only a projection, not the final cap. The official 2027-28 figure will depend on league revenue and other financial calculations and will not be finalized until much closer to the start of that league year.
Still, the updated estimate gives teams a clearer planning target. With the NBA’s revenues continuing to push the cap upward, franchises can now work from the expectation that another sizable increase is coming, one that will influence everything from extensions and max contracts to free agency and luxury-tax strategy.
