Tyler Perry has made a surprising career decision. While promoting his latest movie amid legal battles, the filmmaker revealed plans that will change his routine in the new year.
Perry revealed the plan during a Sept. 14 interview on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle. Justin Sylvester asked if he ever plans to “chill out” in his career. The actor said, “Yep, moving to Puerto Rico at the top of the year, and I’m pulling back a whole lot.”
Perry, who celebrated his 57th birthday last week, explained what inspired the decision. He added, “Getting older [inspired this]. It’s time to slow down a bit, enjoy more time with my son and just take it all in.”
His Hollywood plans aren’t the only thing Perry is rethinking
Tyler Perry’s plans also include a personal decision about marriage. He shares his 11-year-old son, Aman, with former partner Gelila Bekele, whom he dated from 2009 to 2020. The 57-year-old said he does not intend to marry, explaining his position during the same interview. He said, “At this age, no, that’s not a good idea for me. So no, won’t be any marriage for me.”
The announcement comes after Why Did I Get Married Again?, the third film in Perry’s franchise that began in 2007. The movie was released on Netflix on Sept. 9 and features Perry alongside several returning cast members.
Outside entertainment, Perry has also continued helping people facing financial challenges. In July, he covered Janay Duberry’s remaining Harvard graduate tuition balance. In September, he offered help to an Illinois woman who reportedly faced about $18,000 in debt after a pipe burst.
Perry has also faced legal disputes in recent years. He is currently involved in two lawsuits involving allegations of sexual misconduct. Perry has strongly denied the allegations, while the cases remain part of the ongoing legal proceedings.
The American filmmaker and actor has not announced a complete departure from Hollywood. His latest comments instead reveal a desire to change how he approaches his career.
