Zach Cregger has revealed when production on The Flood will begin, giving fans a promising update on the sci-fi thriller ahead of its 2028 release date. The director confirmed that the Steven Spielberg-produced project remains firmly on track.

Asked where he stands with The Flood, Cregger told Variety, “I’m in soft prep, and we’ll start hard prep in the new year.” When pressed on when cameras would roll, he answered, “Hopefully next summer.” That timeline supports Warner Bros.’ scheduled release date of August 11, 2028. The studio has already staked out the slot, one month before it releases Gladys, a spin-off of Cregger’s Weapons.
The update is of substance because The Flood represents a return to original filmmaking for Cregger. Barbarian and Weapons turned him into one of Hollywood’s most exciting original genre filmmakers. Resident Evil then pulled him briefly into franchise territory. Cregger has called the video-game adaptation his only franchise movie and made clear he wants to get back to writing whatever he wants. The Flood, produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment alongside New Line Cinema and Warner Bros., fits that ambition.
The project itself has an unusual origin. Cregger told Deadline that the chance to work with Spielberg inspired The Flood. Given only a small window to devise something they could make together, he gave himself roughly five days to generate an idea. “I entered a state of mind that I have not experienced since and had not experienced before,” Cregger said, describing a creative “frenzy” over pitching Spielberg. “I was fully out of my mind.”
Then Cregger was finishing Weapons and writing Resident Evil as the 2023 Writers Guild strike loomed. The breakthrough came while he and his wife, actress Sara Paxton, watched Ad Astra. Paxton noted that few things feel scarier than being trapped in space. Cregger asked what would be the scariest thing, and that answer became the foundation of The Flood (via Esquire).
He pitched Spielberg, who replied, “Good man.” Two days later, they sold the project.
