Eddie Hearn bragging about making Conor Benn rich sounds an awful lot like Dr. Frankenstein admiring his handiwork right after the villagers torched the lab.
“The answer is because of me and because of how good he is in his self-promotion,” Hearn told iFL TV. “The reason Conor Benn made all this money, the reason he got that fight, is because of the job that we did for Conor Benn and the job that he did promotionally himself and the work that he put in. That’s why. He didn’t do it on merit.”
Hearn essentially confessed what skeptical observers knew from day one: Benn reached a massive pay-per-view stage through careful staging rather than championship pedigree. The Matchroom machine manufactured an attraction, Benn leaned into his famous surname, and together they sold the public on a star who never actually climbed the ranks.
Nigel Benn’s surname supplied instant credibility, while Matchroom provided the platform, careful matchmaking and nonstop publicity. Conor’s celebrity raced far beyond his ring development. He never received the difficult mid-level fights that might have forced him to repair his defense and sharpen his judgment under pressure.
Ryan Garcia shattered the entire illusion inside of six minutes. Benn walked into that ring without a defensive compass, swinging wildly and looking utterly lost against world-class speed before crashing to the canvas in the second round.
Nigel Benn’s ferocity belonged to another era, yet Conor was marketed as if fighting spirit is passed down through pure genetics. When the bell rings, pedigree disappears. Now Benn finds himself stranded in boxing no-man’s-land. When an attraction gets dismantled this violently, stepping back down to domestic level feels like a humiliating downgrade that the paying audience rarely accepts.
