A new trailer for the upcoming documentary on Dennis Miller is unveiled this Wednesday. A young Miller is introduced in Miller Night Football who joined the MNF booth in 2000. As captured in the HBO documentary, this addition elicited mixed views of the commentator-comedian. The documentary will be released on the platform on September 29, 2026.
The official synopsis reads, “Miller Night Football chronicles comedian Dennis Miller’s unlikely arrival in the “Monday Night Football” (MNF) broadcast booth in 2000, alongside veteran sportscaster Al Michaels and former NFL quarterback Dan Fouts. Intended to reinvigorate the iconic television franchise and attract a broader audience, Miller’s addition and his distinctly cerebral brand of humor was met with both intrigue and skepticism across sports and television.”

Inside Dennis Miller’s unlikely Monday Night Football experiment
The HBO documentary’s trailer reflects on the lost charm of the Monday Night Football broadcast in the late 90s. In the trailer, Al Michaels says, “The show had to be refreshed.” This cuts to the live introduction of Dennis Miller, who joined the booth for two seasons, between 2000 and 2001.
This stunt was considered “crazy” by many, who questioned, “What was a guy from Saturday Night Live doing on Monday Night Football?” However, Miller’s commentary from the booth on the football field was perceived as hilarious by some. As a person in the documentary stated, “You never knew what was gonna come out of his mouth.”
However, this hilarious saga on MNF came to an end in 2001, when Dennis Miller was eventually replaced by John Madden. The upcoming documentary captures the unique change and legacy Miller brought to the broadcast during his short tenure.
Miller Night Football is directed and edited by Jeff Cameron and is the second film in the NFL Shorts Series, after 2025’s The Shuffle. Ross Ketover, Ken Rodgers, Keith Cossrow, and Jessica Boddy served as executive producers.
