The Toronto Maple Leafs will start the season without forward Max Domi. Leafs general manager John Chayka opened his training camp remarks Wednesday by stating Domi failed his physical and will be out “indefinitely.”
“He’s going to address that personally in terms of his injury and will do so in the near future,” Chayka said.
The Leafs first revealed Domi’s injury on May 25, saying the 31-year-old had offseason surgery to address an issue he played through and that complications arose from the procedure.
The Leafs did not disclose specifics on the nature of Domi’s injury.
Domi is set to enter the third year of a four-year contract with a $3.75 million AAV. The feisty, playmaking winger is coming off a season in which he finished seventh in Leafs scoring with 36 points in 80 games. Domi’s most productive season for the Leafs was in 2023-24, when he scored nine goals and totalled 47 points in 80 games.
Domi has spent 11 seasons in the NHL with seven teams. His best season came in 2018-19 when he logged 72 points in 82 games.
What we know
While Chayka and the Leafs were forthcoming about injuries to several players, the team has revealed very little about Domi’s injury since first disclosing it in May. It wasreported in the offseason that Domi underwent back surgery, but the Leafs appear intent on ensuring Domi handles how the injury is discussed.
“I think it’s appropriate that he does, and he’d like to, and I think that’s fair,” Chayka told The Athletic’s Jonas Siegel and Chris Johnston during a September interview.
Why Domi will be missed
Over his three seasons in Toronto, Domi established himself as a key offensive contributor and — more and more — a bona fide locker room presence. He formed strong relationships with players such as Scott Laughton and took rookie Easton Cowan, a fellow former London Knight, under his wing last season.
Domi’s spirit and importance to the team were also evident last season. When Anaheim Ducks defenceman Radko Gudas sent Auston Matthews out for the season with an ugly knee-on-knee hit on March 12, Domi responded by dropping the gloves with Gudas in the March 30 rematch. Just three seconds into the game, Domi landed several punches on the bruising defenceman, much to the delight of the Leafs bench.
As the Leafs try to get back into the playoffs after one of the most disappointing seasons in franchise history, finishing 28th in the league with a 32-36-14 record, they will have to do so without one of their biggest personalities.
