Roy Keane has made his true feelings clear about JJ Gabriel’s request to leave Manchester United amid interest from several huge European clubs.

Gabriel – Joseph Junior Andreou Gabriel – reportedly informed United that he would like his registration cancelled earlier this week.

The youngster, who has been nicknamed ‘Kid Messi’ and made his first senior appearance against Atlético Madrid in pre-season, has sent a formal notice to United informing the club of his intention to leave and become a free agent, with Real Madrid, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain all interested.

United do have the right to challenge his request, with Premier League rules stating: “During your child’s registration period, their registration may only be cancelled if everyone agrees (the club, player and their parent/carer).”

The rules add: “If the parties don’t agree, then any person involved can also ask the Premier League to provide a binding decision on a termination request.”

The teenager first joined United as an 11-year-old and is widely considered a potential generational talent, having won the 2025/26 Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award after netting over 20 times last term.

A report from BBC Sport claims that sources close to Gabriel feel let down by United and believe promises around a pathway to the first team have not been kept, despite Gabriel being involved in Michael Carrick’s pre-season squad.

Gabriel is not currently training with the first team, although United still hold out hope that he may stay.

Gary Neville and Roy Keane offer take on JJ Gabriel saga

As expected, the topic of Gabriel’s shock exit was a talking point on the latest episode of The Overlap, with Jamie Carragher, Gary Neville, Jill Scott, Ian Wright and Keane offering their respective takes on the situation.

Neville claimed the youngster has been let down by his representatives, while Carragher even suggested the negative press may be detrimental to Gabriel’s progression, citing previous examples of prospects who failed to fulfil their potential.

“I just don’t see the logic from any representatives of a 15-year-old boy who think it’s a good idea to put his name in lights right now,” Neville said.

“You want to try and sort of douse the flames, don’t you?

“You don’t want to add fuel to a fire when you have got basically…”

He added: “Max Dowman, if you remember last year when he came on, you know, Sky probably asked for an interview at the end of the game.

“Arsenal said no.

“They got him straight back into the changing room.

“He’s back at school on the Monday morning.”

Keane waded in and explained how he believes the player should be more patient and wait for his chance to play for the first team on a regular basis.

The former United midfielder said: “Are you telling me he can’t wait? If you are 15 years of age and you’re talking about playing for Man United’s first team, just wait. Can you wait another six weeks if United get through the cup?

“Carrick’s under pressure. Obviously, [Sir Alex] Ferguson would throw young lads into the first team. But United, they need wins [right now].

“I don’t think United are in a position where they go, ‘We can write off a cup game tonight and play a couple of young lads. We need to get momentum into the season. If some 15-year-old is spitting his dummy out, we’ll deal with that.’”

Michael Carrick addresses JJ Gabriel saga

Following United’s 3-2 Carabao Cup third-round defeat against Brighton on Wednesday (September 16), Carrick was forced to speak out on the situation, telling reporters that he is, in fact, part of the “conversations” to keep Gabriel at the club.

“I just think we’ve got to be really careful of the whole situation, you know,” he said.

“He’s a young boy, he’s 15, and for me, definitely, and from a club point of view, is looking after our younger players, their welfare, their well-being, their exposure, and I think we’ve got to be really, all of us, I think we’ve got to be really conscious of that, really, in this situation.”

He added: “It’s more about the welfare, the care and the attention of JJ as a child, really.

“He’s certainly a young man.

“The situation is what it is, but we have to be careful about the exposure on that one.”

United return to action away at Fulham on Sunday (September 20).
