Former NBA forward and Georgetown standout Mike Sweetney has died at the age of 43.
The news was announced Thursday by Sweetney’s wife, India, in an emotional Facebook post. No cause of death has been publicly disclosed.
“With the heaviest hearts, we are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Michael,” India wrote. “To know Mike Sweetney was love to him. No one loved him more and he loved no one more than his family. His children were the light of his life, and he lived every day to give them the best life possible. He’s been my best friend for 30 years and my husband for almost 20. I’m not sure what we or I will do without him.”
Long before he reached the NBA, Sweetney had established himself as one of the most productive big men in college basketball. During three seasons at Georgetown, he averaged 18.2 points and 9.2 rebounds while shooting 54.4 percent from the field. His junior season was his best, as he put up 22.8 points, 10.4 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game before declaring for the 2003 NBA Draft.
The New York Knicks selected him with the ninth overall pick that year.
Sweetney spent his first two NBA seasons in New York before being traded to the Chicago Bulls in 2005. Across four NBA seasons, he appeared in 233 games and averaged 6.5 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 48.5 percent from the field.
Sweetney’s basketball journey continued beyond the NBA, including time overseas and in other professional leagues. He later moved into coaching and worked as an assistant at Yeshiva University, staying connected to the game long after his playing career had ended.
For Knicks fans, Sweetney will always be remembered as one of the franchise’s prominent first-round selections from the early 2000s. At Georgetown, however, his legacy runs even deeper. He was a dominant interior presence, a two-time All-Big East selection and one of the program’s most productive players of his era.
Sweetney’s career took him from Georgetown to Madison Square Garden and beyond, but his family’s tribute framed his life in much simpler terms: a husband, a father and a man deeply loved by the people closest to him.
Mike Sweetney was 43.
