Joe Louis came within one punch of disaster on September 18, 1946, before knocking out Tami Mauriello in 2:09 of the opening round at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

Mauriello circled left, used a wide hook as a decoy, and drove a hard right into Louis’s jaw. The punch knocked the champion backward into the ropes and brought 38,494 spectators to their feet.

For a few seconds, the heavyweight championship looked ready to change hands.

Mauriello then made the worst possible choice against Louis. Rather than regain his balance and build toward another clean right, he rushed forward with wide punches. The challenger surrendered his angle, stepped directly into the pocket, and gave boxing’s most economical finisher the exact distance he needed.

Louis did not panic or waste energy trying to escape along the ropes. He grabbed Mauriello, cleared his head, and returned to punching range almost immediately. That brief clinch separated a shaken champion from a beaten one.

Once Louis recovered, the difference in technique was severe. Mauriello’s blows traveled in looping arcs and pulled him off balance. Louis answered with compact hooks and uppercuts that traveled only six to ten inches. His punches carried full leverage without a long windup, allowing him to strike between the challenger’s slower swings.

A short left hook dropped Mauriello near a neutral corner. He rose at nine and tried to punch his way out, but Louis attacked the head and body with both hands. Another burst drove Mauriello to his knees beside the ropes, where referee Arthur Donovan completed the count.

“I thought I had him and got careless,” Mauriello said afterward.

Carelessness was only part of the problem. Mauriello weighed 198½ pounds, almost 13 pounds less than Louis, and also gave away reach. Trading toe-to-toe erased his speed and allowed the larger champion to use his superior balance, leverage, and shorter punches. His best chance rested on striking from an angle and leaving before Louis answered. Instead, he remained directly in front of him.

Louis admitted that the opening right surprised and stung him. Once his legs returned, he threw so many punches that he could not identify the shot that caused the final knockdown.

The victory was Louis’s 23rd heavyweight title defense and his fifth first-round knockout as champion. It also gave a misleading picture of where he was physically. His reflexes had slowed during the war years, but his finishing instincts remained vicious when an opponent supplied an opening.

His later struggles with Jersey Joe Walcott exposed that decline over longer fights. Mauriello never forced Louis to solve that type of puzzle. He hurt him, lost control of himself, and turned a possible upset into the final destructive flash of Louis’s prime.
