Expectations can be a killer. These days, people will often read and speculate about things for so long that they somehow become real, even if they’re not. Then, when those promises aren’t met, it can lead to all manner of disappointment. We build something in our heads that isn’t reality. It happens all the time, and James Gunn is already trying to stop it for his upcoming movie, Man of Tomorrow.
In the months since the film was announced, all manner of rumors have circulated about the movie. Some have been confirmed by Gunn. Others have not. Some are potentially true. Others are not. But this week, when asked about a timeline to reveal the film’s “secret characters,” Gunn had an eye-opening reply. “What secret characters?” Gunn posted on Threads. “It’s [a] movie about Lex and Clark. People shouldn’t expect substantial amounts of other characters.”
Most likely, the fan who asked was talking primarily about the rumor that Adria Arjona will be playing Wonder Woman in the movie. Gunn and DC have yet to confirm Arjona is even in the movie, let alone playing Wonder Woman, though Arjona has confirmed her mysterious involvement in recent interviews. That might mean she’s Wonder Woman or maybe she’s Maxima, or neither.
What Gunn’s comment mainly points to, though, is that A) the movie isn’t a backdoor way to introduce a bunch of characters, so fans shouldn’t expect that, and B) that it’s a movie about Superman and Lex Luthor. So any characters who are in it will be in service of that story.
Following the events of Superman, it seems pretty clear that whatever the movie is actually about, it will heavily rely on the different points of view Superman and Lex have. Points of view that will be somehow challenged by Brainiac. Does it make sense to bring Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash or whomever else has been floated into a movie about that? Maybe. But, as Gunn suggests, don’t get wrapped up in it.
Man of Tomorrow is coming to theaters on July 9, 2027, and despite Gunn’s desire to not show anything from the movie until then, we’d imagine we get a trailer by the end of the year.
