If Will Smith‘s I Am Legend 2 sticks to its creative plans, it will make the same mistake as Star Wars, a decision Disney likely regrets to this day.
I Am Legend 2 is still in development. Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman recently told the Radio Times that despite some roadblocks, the creative team behind the sequel is doing everything it can to “get it made.” Will Smith is set to return as Robert Neville and star alongside Michael B. Jordan.
You might be asking: How is Smith returning when his character died in I Am Legend? The sequel plans to follow the alternate ending, where Neville survives and leaves for the survivors’ colony with Anna and Ethan. Retconning an important creative decision is a Hollywood trend that fails more often than it works. Just look at Star Wars, which is still reeling from its disastrous retcon.
Why Hollywood’s most famous ending retcons so often go wrong
The three most polarizing words in Star Wars: “Somehow, Palpatine returned.” Those notorious words in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker immediately sent the movie off a cliff.
Vader famously killed Palpatine in Return of the Jedi when he threw him down a chasm before the destruction of the Death Star. Over 40 years later, the sequel trilogy resurrected Palpatine in The Rise of Skywalker.
The majority of Star Wars fans hated the decision to bring Palpatine back. Consider me one of those fans. Star Wars perfectly closed Palpatine’s story in Return of the Jedi. Lucasfilm tarnished that storyline by making Palpatine the villain in The Rise of Skywalker.
It grossed over $1 billion, but The Rise of Skywalker sent the franchise into a tailspin, so much so that Disney paused production on future Star Wars movies. Star Wars movies have never recovered, especially after the underperformance of The Mandalorian and Grogu.
I Am Legend might not be as impactful as Star Wars, but retconning an important death or ending for a sequel rarely works. What’s done is done—Robert Neville died in I Am Legend. It cannot be erased, no matter how much Warner Bros. wants to take it back.
Smith can return for an I Am Legend sequel. The solution is to go backwards, not forwards. In the movie, the zombie outbreak happened in 2009. The majority of the film takes place in 2012. That is three years unaccounted for in the I Am Legend universe. Tell a story about Robert Neville during that time period. That way, the original ending is preserved, and Smith can safely return.
I Am Legend 2, please don’t make the same mistake as Star Wars.
