Nicolas Batum has announced his retirement from professional basketball, bringing an end to a career that spanned nearly two decades in the NBA and made him one of the most accomplished players in French basketball history.
The 37-year-old forward shared his decision on social media, closing the chapter on a playing career that began in his native France before taking him to the Portland Trail Blazers, Charlotte Hornets, Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers.

Selected with the 25th overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, Batum quickly established himself in Portland as a versatile wing who could defend multiple positions, distribute the ball and contribute without needing to dominate possession. He later took on a larger offensive role in Charlotte before becoming a valuable veteran presence during his years with the Clippers and his stint in Philadelphia.
Batum’s impact extended well beyond the NBA. A longtime member of the French national team, he helped his country win Olympic silver medals in Tokyo in 2021 and Paris in 2024. One of his defining international moments came in the Tokyo semifinals, when his last-second block against Slovenia preserved France’s narrow victory and secured a place in the gold-medal game. He retired from international competition after the Paris Olympics.
His announcement follows a summer of uncertainty about his NBA future. Batum became a free agent after the Clippers declined his team option for the 2026–27 season. Although a return to French club basketball had been discussed, he has instead decided to step away from professional play altogether.
Batum’s career was defined less by individual scoring accolades than by adaptability. Whether asked to start, facilitate an offense, defend a leading scorer or provide experience off the bench, he found ways to contribute across different teams and stages of his career.
After 18 NBA seasons and years representing France on the international stage, Batum leaves basketball with a legacy built on versatility, longevity and a willingness to do whatever his team needed.
