Jessica Lange is returning to American Horror Story 13. Her return is accompanied by a surprise. As she recently teased, Lange will be playing a secret fifth character, in addition to reprising her four iconic fan-favorite past roles. The actress played coy about her latest role, challenging viewers to guess who it is.
During her appearance on Good Morning America on Tuesday, Lange opened up about her decision to return to the series, saying, “It really was just the idea of bringing those four characters back — and one mystery character that I’m not going to [spoil].” The American actress also added, “There is a fifth character, but I won’t say who that is, and I’d be curious if anybody can figure it out.”
As for Lange’s confirmed roles, the King Kong actress is returning as Constance Langdon from season one’s Murder House, Sister Jude Martin from season two’s Asylum, Fiona Goode from season three’s Coven, and Elsa Mars from season four’s Freak Show.
During the interview, Lange also revealed she only agreed to return for the milestone season on one condition from creator Ryan Murphy: bringing back her classic characters. She is most excited to play Elsa again.

On Good Morning America, Lange also discussed Murphy’s pitch to bring her back for this season, which notably included something that the actress couldn’t resist. As it turns out, the 77-year-old will also be performing a musical number in the upcoming season 13 of American Horror Story.
“He did promise a musical number for one of the characters,” Lange said, referring to Murphy. “I have to beg, borrow and plead to get anybody to let me sing.”
American Horror Story 13 returns on FX on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET/PT, and will be available for streaming the following day on Hulu in the U.S. It will also stream internationally on Disney+.
