Twenty-three years is a lifetime in esports, long enough for entire regions to rise and collapse twice over. So when Jason Lake confirmed that Complexity no longer exists as an active organization, it landed as more than routine roster news.
In an announcement published September 23, 2026, Lake said he and his core team have stepped away for good, and that Complexity’s intellectual property has been transferred back to GameSquare. For a North American Counter-Strike scene that has watched its old guard thin out year after year, losing one of its most recognizable founding names is the kind of moment that stops the scroll.
From Two Players on a Credit Card to a 23-Year Institution
Complexity’s origin story is practically folklore at this point. Lake founded the organization in 2003 by paying two players out of his own pocket, and the team was fielding a Counter-Strike roster as early as 2004 before making the jump to CS:GO in 2013. The org is headquartered in Frisco, Texas.
Ownership shifted more than once along the way. Jerry Jones and real estate investor John Goff took a majority stake in 2017, GameSquare later got involved, and by 2024 the company sat under Global Esports Properties. Lake said he personally reacquired Complexity a couple of years back, a deal that left GameSquare holding a seller note, one that’s now factored into the IP handoff – a structural echo of the ownership churn that’s hit other legacy brands, including the reported shakeup around NiP’s potential Abu Dhabi relocation.
The Trophy Case Nobody Wants to See Locked Up
Complexity’s resume is a genuinely strong one for a region that spent most of the last decade getting bullied by European rosters. The org lifted cs_summit: Season 3 in 2018, beating G2 Esports 2-1 in the final, and reached the quarterfinals of FACEIT Major: London 2018 with a lineup of ShahZaM, ANDROID, dephh, stanislaw, and yay before MIBR sent them home.
The CS2 era produced the roster fans still argue was the best North America has ever fielded: EliGE, JT, floppy, Grim, and hallzerk reached the grand final of IEM Sydney 2023, the very first CS2 LAN, losing a tight 2-1 to FaZe Clan. That same core beat Team Liquid 2-1 to qualify for PGL Major Copenhagen 2024 through the Americas RMR, then reached the Elimination Stage before FaZe closed the door again, 0-2. It’s a leadership churn worth comparing to the reshuffling that saw karrigan leave FaZe Clan for Falcons, another reminder that even the sport’s most stable-seeming institutions aren’t immune to sudden change.
Why This One Stings for NA Counter-Strike
According to Lake, the decision to shut down was made at the end of last year, after weighing Complexity’s business prospects and concluding that raising fresh capital would be difficult. Rather than let the organization limp along, he chose to close it in an orderly fashion, thanking everyone who competed for or worked with Complexity over the years, along with the fans who stuck around.
Lake made clear he isn’t retiring. He’s planning a sabbatical through 2026 before chasing new opportunities, ideally still inside esports. The scene has seen plenty of veterans reinvent themselves rather than disappear, much like ScreaM’s return to Counter-Strike proved that a familiar name rarely stays away for good.
What’s certain is that North American Counter-Strike just lost one of the last links to its earliest era, an organization that outlasted ownership changes, game engine transitions, and two decades of regional inconsistency. GameSquare now owns the Complexity name on paper, but the org that built it is gone.
