We all lie to ourselves to be happy. But we are dangerously at risk of allowing Meta to chibi-wash its image.
Meta—you know Meta, the company that is perhaps the most famous and aggressive offender when it comes to extracting and exploiting personal data from people—is in the middle of a little reputational renaissance driven by its AI suddenly not totally sucking. Muse, the company’s flagship AI app, has been hanging around the top of the App Store for weeks now, ever since the company announced its “personal AI agent” earlier this month.
The app has gotten rave reviews from the technorati, who have been impressed by the re-skinned version of OpenClaw (which you’ll remember Meta acquired earlier this year), and apparently primed them for the seemingly full re-embrace of Meta that came following the company’s Meta Connect event. Those open arms immediately wrapped around Jolly, the company’s apparent AI mascot that looks like a barely-legally-distinct-enough-to-avoid-a-copyright-lawsuit version of a Labubu doll.
The proliferation of the mascot seems to be a personal project of Alexandr Wang, the chief AI officer at Meta. He’s spent days posting the cherub-cheeked little monstrosity in memes galore, including ones that are entirely too horny for no apparent reason.

But if making Jolly take off has been Wang’s pet project, it’s about to get easier. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg pulled a Steve Jobs-ian “one last thing” while on stage at Meta Connect and pulled out a new toy called Muse Charm. It’s a wearable or carryable pendant where a personalized version of Jolly will live, allowing the owner to play with it like an AI-infused Tamagotchi.
What could be dismissed as Meta’s stupidest AI device is probably its most insidious and dangerous.
Meta Muse might be the thing that has flung the company back into the AI conversation after being left for dead months ago, but the reality of AI agents is that they are, as of now, a tool almost exclusively for folks with a lot of disposable income. The “personal assistant” can have some functionality in a person’s everyday life—maybe it puts an appointment on your calendar that you might have otherwise forgotten—but it’s mostly built to buy stuff for you. And most people 1. don’t have a lot of excess cash lying around and 2. like shopping around.
Which is why the Tamagotchi-like toy is such a Trojan horse. It’s much easier to imagine any random person playing with a Muse Charm and interacting with the shamelessly and maliciously cute little avatar that Meta has crafted. It’s kid-friendly in its design, though it’ll likely have plenty of adult adopters.
It will do the dirty deed of desensitizing people to the idea of having an always-on AI on their person at all times, listening for their voice and collecting who knows what else along the way. Meta has already effectively run this playbook with its smart glasses, which, while still seemingly reviled by most people, have sold more than nine million pairs and managed to successfully blend data-collecting cameras into a daily accessory.
People are already giving in to the, well, “charm” of the Meta Charm character, but we simply cannot give in to the friendly-faced bit of spyware. This is still Meta we’re talking about. It’s a company that did so much damage to an entire generation of kids with its endless feel-bad algorithm that it got declared a public nuisance. It’s the company that has endlessly violated user privacy and simply paid the fines because its money is infinite. It’s the company that has allegedly turned fraud into a significant profit center for itself. There’s literally a film coming out this year about how bad it’s been for society (no matter how middling that movie might end up being)!
Whether people know the details or not, the broad strokes are largely common knowledge at this point. And yet an AI-generated friendly yeti-looking motherfucker is about to Jedi mind trick a portion of the population into throwing themselves right back into the data tarpit.
The reality is, Meta probably doesn’t even really need people to actually use its AI tools, whether it’s the Muse agent or the Charm digital “pet.” What it needs is for people to sign up for Muse, play around with it aimlessly for a little bit, and then forget that they ever used it so they don’t revoke permissions.
The company is, once again, looking to find the line of what people will tolerate to give up access to their information. Do not fall for it. Imagine Jolly with his hand in your wallet. Tattoo a reminder on your arm if you have to. Whatever it takes. Just do not trust this furry front man for the biggest data grabber on the planet.
